    • Removed from 40-man roster
The Brewers designated Clarke for assignment Wednesday.

Advice: The transaction frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for the addition of Aaron Civale, who was acquired via trade. Clarke missed the beginning of the season while recovering from knee surgery and has posted a 5.34 ERA and 26:7 K:BB over 30.1 innings with Triple-A Nashville. Rotowire.com 9 minutes ago
    • Brewers designate RHP Taylor Clarke for assignment
Brewers designated RHP Taylor Clarke for assignment.

Advice: Milwaukee had to kick someone off the 40-man roster to make room for the newly acquired Aaron Civale. Clarke was yet to appear in the majors this season and had a 5.34 ERA in 10 games with Triple-A Nashville. The Brewers have seven days to trade Clarke or place him on waivers. • RHP Cristian Mena could start Wednesday
RHP Cristian Mena could make his MLB debut on Wednesday.

Advice: Mena was spotted in the Diamondbacks’ clubhouse prior to Tuesday’s game. While Manager Torey Lovullo said Mena is on their taxi squad, Arizona doesn’t have a scheduled starter for Wednesday’s game in Los Angeles and Mena last pitched in Triple-A on June 26th. Mena, acquired in a trade with the White Sox last offseason in exchange for outfielder Dominic Fletcher, is already on the 40-man roster. The No. 11 prospect in Arizona’s system according to MLB.com, Mena had a 4.90 ERA in 16 starts with Triple-A Reno. Rotoworld 19 minutes ago
    • Rare regular-rest start Sunday
Lopez will start on regular rest Sunday versus the Phillies for just the second time this season, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Lopez struggled in his last start Tuesday versus the Giants, allowing just two runs but walking four over five inefficient innings. Atlanta has baked in extra rest for Lopez whenever it can during the first half as the right-hander shifts from reliever to starter, but he'll take the ball on normal rest against the division rival Phillies this weekend. With 79.1 innings in 2024, Lopez has already exceeded his workload from each of the previous two seasons. Rotowire.com 30 minutes ago

    • Kerry Carpenter (back) experiencing discomfort
Kerry Carpenter (back) experienced increased discomfort in his back during workouts.

Advice: Carpenter had started baseball activities, but is now on rest and rehab. Consider this a setback in his return. Carpenter has been on the injured list with a lumbar injury since the end of May. He hit .283 with eight home runs and 29 RBI in 50 games this season. Rotoworld 35 minutes ago

    • Cleared for rehab assignment
Smith-Shawver (oblique) will begin a rehab assignment with High-A Rome on Wednesday.

Advice: Smith-Shawver was diagnosed with a Grade 2 left oblique strain back in late May but has been cleared to return to game action. The young right-hander should be an option for Atlanta's rotation shortly after the All-Star break if all goes well, although it's possible he'll remain in the minors rather than rejoin the major-league club. • Traded to Milwaukee
The Rays agreed to trade Civale to the Brewers on Wednesday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.

Advice: The return for Tampa Bay will be minor-league infielder Gregory Barrios, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Civale has an ERA north of 5.00 through 17 starts this season, but his xFIP is almost a full run lower at 4.09 and he should help stabilize the rotation for the first-place Brewers. Shane Baz was scratched from his scheduled start for Triple-A Durham on Tuesday and appears a likely candidate to replace Civale in the Rays' rotation. Rotowire.com Today, 6:12 am

    • Civale traded to Brewers
Brewers acquired RHP Aaron Civale from the Rays, according to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman.

Advice: The Rays acquired Civale last July from the Guardians in a deal for Kyle Mansardo. He went 4-9 with a 5.17 ERA in 27 starts for the Rays. Civale has a 5.07 ERA despite a 4.09 xFIP this season so this could be a shrewd pickup by the Brewers. Not much has changed with his fantasy value as he moves into the Milwaukee rotation. • Blanks Friars for fifth win
Eovaldi (5-3) picked up the win in Tuesday's 7-0 victory over the Padres, allowing just one hit over seven scoreless innings. He struck out six without walking a batter.

Advice: Bryce Johnson's third-inning single spoiled any shot Eovaldi might have had at making history, but the right-hander still put together a dominant performance before leaving the mound after 92 pitches (61 strikes). The quality start was his sixth of the year, and Eovaldi will take a 3.15 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 80:26 K:BB through 80 innings into his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home this weekend against the Rays.
