    • Done for season after procedure
Whitlock (elbow) underwent an internal bracing procedure Thursday and will not pitch again in 2024, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports.

Advice: Whitlock avoided Tommy John reconstruction surgery and instead had an internal bracing procedure on his right elbow UCL. The surgery was performed by Dr. Jeffrey Dugas at the Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopedics Center in Birmingham, Ala. The right-hander is expected to make a full recovery, which could take between 10 and 12 months. A return at some point during the 2025 season is expected. Whitlock's 2024 season ended after four starts; he had a 1.96 ERA and 1.15 WHIP over 18.1 innings. Rotowire.com Friday, 5:01 am

    • Garrett Whitlock undergoes internal brace procedure
Garrett Whitlock underwent internal brace procedure on his right elbow on Thursday.

Advice: The good news here is that Whitlock didn’t wind up requiring a full Tommy John elbow reconstruction, which gives him a chance to be ready to return during the early stages of the 2025 season. Rotoworld Thursday, 6:24 pm

    • Undergoing surgery Thursday
Whitlock (elbow) will undergo internal brace surgery Thursday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

Advice: The Red Sox haven't laid out an official timeline for Whitlock's return, but the 27-year-old righty has expressed optimism that he will be able to return for the start of the 2025 season. He will close the book on 2024 with a 1.96 ERA and 1.15 WHIP alongside a 17:7 K:BB through 18.1 innings over four starts. Rotowire.com Thursday, 1:58 pm

    • Racks up 16th hold
Harvey gave up a hit and struck out three over 1.1 scoreless innings Wednesday to record his 16th hold of the season in a win over Atlanta.

Advice: The 29-year-old righty is second in the majors in holds behind the Cardinals' JoJo Romero, who has 18. Harvey has stayed healthy so far in 2024 and produced dominant numbers with a 2.22 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 33:6 K:BB through 28.1 innings, but he has yet to pick up a save due to Kyle Finnegan also remaining sharp as the Nationals' closer. • Headed for surgery
Whitlock said Saturday that he is expecting to undergo an internal brace procedure for his right elbow, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Whitlock is set to meet with Dr. Jeff Dugas on Wednesday, the same surgeon who performed Tommy John surgery on the right-hander in 2019, per McCaffery. Whitlock appears optimistic that he'll avoid another Tommy John surgery and will be able to make a full recovery ahead of the 2025 season, but official word on his type of surgery won't be known until after he meets with Dr. Dugas on Wednesday. Whitlock made four starts for the Red Sox before landing on the 15-day injured list April 17 with a left oblique strain, and the 27-year-old was later pulled off his rehab assignment after sustaining damage to the UCL in his right elbow. • Picks up ninth save
Doval gave up a run on two hits and a walk while striking out one in the ninth inning Friday to record his ninth save of the season in an 8-7 win over the Mets.

Advice: The Giants scored six of their runs in the eighth and ninth innings to create the save chance, but Doval very nearly squandered it following a leadoff double by pinch hitter DJ Stewart and a fielding error by Marco Luciano. It was the first earned run the right-hander has allowed since May 8 at Coors Field, and on the season Doval carries a 3.05 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 27:15 K:BB through 20.2 innings while converting nine of 10 save opportunities. • Camilo Doval hangs on for ninth save
Camilo Doval worked around two hits and an error to earn the save on Friday over the Mets. He struck out one.

Advice: This was a treacherous ninth inning for Doval. The Mets rallied on him and then Marco Luciano butchered a tailor-made double play that would’ve ended the game. Then he intentionally walked Brandon Nimmo before punching out J.D. Martinez with a runner on third and one out. Then Matt Chapman made a herculean bare-handed play to end the game. He remains a super steady closing option despite this near collapse. Rotoworld Friday, 7:28 pm
