• Rangers designate OF Derek Hill for assignment
Rangers designated OF Derek Hill for assignment.

Advice: Hill gets the boot because of the Corey Seager injury, since Seager isn’t going on the IL but the Rangers want another infielder, in this case Davis Wendzel, available if needed. Hill was 2-for-9 with a steal in 2 1/2 weeks with the club. Rotoworld 52 minutes ago

  • Hitting and throwing
Wade (hamstring) has begun hitting and throwing programs at the Giants' complex in Arizona, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Advice: Wade still has plenty of boxes to check off before he can start playing in rehab games, but resuming baseball activity is certainly a step in the right direction. The 30-year-old was diagnosed with a Grade 2 hamstring strain in late May and still projects to be sidelined until at least the end of June. Rotowire.com 53 minutes ago

  • Astros confirm Tommy John surgery for Urquidy
José Urquidy underwent successful Tommy John surgery Wednesday, the Astros announced.

Advice: We know Urquidy underwent surgery Wednesday and everyone assumed it was Tommy John, but the Astros didn’t confirm it until today. Urquidy likely will attempt to return next August or September. One imagines the Astros will non-tender him this winter, particularly since he’ll be eligible for free agency after next year anyway. • DFA'd by Texas
The Rangers designated Hill for assignment Friday, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.

Advice: With Texas opting to keep Corey Seager (hamstring) off the IL, Davis Wendzel was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock in a corresponding move. Hill was called up from Triple-A Round Rock on May 21. He appeared in five games for the Rangers, going 2-for-9 with one run and one stolen base over that span. Hill will weigh his options should he clear waivers. Rotowire.com Today, 2:58 pm

  • Recalled from Triple-A
The Rangers recalled Wendzel from Triple-A Round Rock on Friday, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.

Advice: With Corey Seager day-to-day with a hamstring injury, the Rangers will bring Wendzel up from the minors to provide some short-term infield depth. The 27-year-old was optioned to Round Rock in May after going just 2-for-29 in 17 big-league games, but he's since slashed .250/.364/.386 across 55 plate appearances in Triple-A. Derek Hill was designated for assignment in a corresponding move. Rotowire.com Today, 2:53 pm

  • Diamondbacks demote LHP Joe Jacques
Diamondbacks optioned LHP Joe Jacques to Triple-A Reno.

Advice: The move makes room for Thyago Vieira, who was claimed off waivers Thursday. Jacques spent just one game on Arizona’s active roster and did not get to pitch. Rotoworld Today, 2:42 pm
  • Rehab assignment extended
Bubic (elbow) had his rehab assignment extended by 10 days Thursday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.

Advice: While Bubic was nearing the end of his 30-day rehab window, Rogers notes that the 10-day extension is an exception for pitchers coming back from Tommy John surgery. Bubic made his eighth rehab start with Triple-A Omaha on Wednesday, throwing four scoreless innings while striking out four. Rotowire.com Today, 2:41 pm

  • Undergoes Tommy John surgery
Urquidy underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow Wednesday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Advice: The Astros had only described Urquidy's surgery as "season-ending" prior to the operation, but it's now likely the 29-year-old righty remains out until the second half of the 2025 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery for the second time in his career. He will finish 2024 with a 5.29 ERA and 1.43 WHIP across 63 innings and will enter his final year of arbitration eligibility this offseason. Rotowire.com Today, 2:40 pm

  • Kris Bubic (elbow) gets rehab assignment extended
Kris Bubic has had his rehab assignment extended until June 15 as he makes his way back from Tommy John surgery.

Advice: That’s time for him to make two more starts. Bubic has thus far made seven starts in the minors, the last two of which have seen him total 7 2/3 scoreless innings for Triple-A Omaha. He does have an option year left, so the Royals could leave him in Triple-A when the rehab assignment expires. Rotoworld Today, 2:38 pm
