• Cardinals activated RHP Giovanny Gallegos from IL
Cardinals activated RHP Giovanny Gallegos from the 15-day injured list.

Advice: Gallegos has been out since early May with shoulder trouble. He’s been a steady reliever for St. Louis over the last few seasons and sometimes even an option for saves. Gallegos has recorded at least 10 saves in each of the last three years, though that’s unlikely to continue this season. He has a 12.00 ERA and SO:BB of 13:7 in 13 appearances with the Cardinals this year. Rotoworld Today, 10:14 am
  • Twins recalled LHP Kody Funderburk from Triple-A
Twins recalled LHP Kody Funderburk from Triple-A St. Paul.

Advice: Funderburk will take Jay Jackson’s spot in the Twins bullpen after Jackson was designated for assignment. Funderburk has a 5.18 ERA and SO:BB of 23:12 in 19 appearances with Minnesota this year. Rotoworld Today, 10:08 am
  • Returns from injured list
The Cardinals activated Gallegos (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list Friday.

Advice: St. Louis has a rare Friday off day, but it will have Gallegos back in its bullpen Saturday versus the Giants. The veteran reliever has been out since early May with a right shoulder impingement and didn't pitch well on a rehab assignment, allowing eight runs with a 5:4 K:BB over 6.1 innings. Gallegos will probably be eased into high-leverage situations. Rotowire.com Today, 10:04 am
  • Blue Jays optioned RHP Ryan Burr to Triple-A
Blue Jays optioned RHP Ryan Burr to Triple-A Buffalo.

Advice: Burr was sent to the minors as the corresponding move for the Blue Jays activating Yariel Rodriguez. The 30-year-old right-hander has a 4.91 ERA in three appearances with Toronto this season and a 2.21 ERA in 18 minor league appearances. Burr will be an option for Toronto again this season when the Blue Jays decide they need a fresh bullpen arm. Rotoworld Today, 9:58 am
  • Blows save chance Thursday
Estrada (3-1) blew a save but was credited with the win in Thursday's victory versus the Brewers. He allowed two runs on two hits and one walk while striking out three batters over one inning.

Advice: Primary closer Robert Suarez had pitched on back-to-back days, so San Diego turned to Estrada with a two-run lead in the ninth inning, though the latter had taken the mound on consecutive days as well. Estrada couldn't close things out, giving up a pair of runs on a walk, a single, a wild pitch and a double. To his credit, the right-hander kept the game tied by striking out the final two batters he faced, and he ended up in the win column when Jake Cronenworth smacked a walk-off home run in the bottom of the frame. Though Estrada continues to rack up punchouts -- of his past 13 outs, 12 have come via strikeout -- he's been struggling of late, giving up eight runs on 10 hits and three walks over that span of five outings. • Pushed back to next week
Peterson will no longer start Sunday versus the Cubs after being pushed back in the Mets' rotation, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

Advice: It's not clear when Peterson's next start will come, but it now figures to be early next week against the Yankees. Luis Severino has been bumped up to start Sunday in Chicago on regular rest. Rotowire.com Today, 9:36 am
  • Slated for bulk relief
Ortiz is in line to serve as a bulk reliever in Friday's game versus the Rays, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.

Advice: Carmen Mlodzinski will open for the Pirates before handing things off to Ortiz. Each of Ortiz's last two appearances have come in bulk relief and he's fared well, yielding just one run with a 6:1 K:BB over 9.1 innings of work. Rotowire.com Today, 9:27 am
  • First loss despite solid outing
Nittoli (0-1) took the loss against the Royals on Thursday, allowing an earned run on a solo home run and recording two strikeouts over two innings.

Advice: Nittoli paid dearly for his one mistake, a tie-breaking solo home run surrendered to Bobby Witt in the eighth inning. The Athletics would prove incapable of erasing the one-run deficit in the final two frames, saddling Nittoli with his first major-league loss in 13 career outings. Despite the stumble Thursday, Nittoli has been a solid bullpen piece for manager Mark Kotsay since being summoned from Triple-A Las Vegas in early June, posting a 2.25 ERA across eight innings over seven appearances. • Opening Friday's game
Mlodzinski will serve as the Pirates' opening pitcher in Friday's game versus the Rays, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports.

Advice: It's the third opener assignment this season for Mlodzinski, who didn't allow a run in his first two tries. Luis Ortiz is a good bet to follow in a bulk relief role. Rotowire.com Today, 9:14 am
