    • Takes second loss
Assad (4-2) allowed five runs on seven hits across 5.2 innings to take the loss Thursday against the Reds. He walked two and struck out seven.

Advice: Assad flashed his skill with the seven strikeouts, which tied for his second most in a game this year, but he was ultimately done in by a three-run Elly De La Cruz home run in the third inning. The righty still has a solid 2.74 ERA and 68 strikeouts across 69 innings this season, as he's performed well in his first extended run as a full-time starter for the Cubs. Assad will attempt to bounce back in his next scheduled start, which tentatively lines up for next week against the Rays on the road. Rotowire.com Thursday, 7:34 pm

    • Assad allows five in loss to Reds Thursday
Javier Assad allowed five runs in 5 2/3 innings and took the loss against the Reds on Thursday.

Advice: Assad gave up seven hits, walked two and struck out seven. He was replaced by Luke Little in a 4-4 game in the sixth inning and the run that scored on TJ Friedl’s RBI double was charged to Assad. The five earned runs were the most allowed in any start by Assad this year. His ERA is now 2.74, but his xFIP is significantly higher at 3.98. The 26-year-old right-hander is set to face the Rays on the road next week. Rotoworld Thursday, 6:47 pm

    • Lit up by Yankees
Paddack (4-3) took the loss against the Yankees on Wednesday, allowing seven runs on six hits and two walks while striking out seven batters over four-plus innings.

Advice: Paddack fell behind 4-0 after one frame but bounced back by holding the Yankees without a baserunner over the following three innings. However, the right-hander loaded the bases without retiring a batter in the fifth, and all three of those runners came around to score following his departure to further mar his final stat line. The four innings tied a season-low total for Paddack, matching the amount he completed in his season debut against Milwaukee on April 3. If there's a silver lining, it's that Paddack managed to punch out seven batters, his highest mark over his past five starts. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 9:35 pm

    • Chris Paddack gets hit hard in loss to Yankees
Chris Paddack was hit hard in Wednesday’s loss to the Yankees, giving up seven runs on six hits over his four-plus innings of work.

Advice: On the plus side, the right-hander was able to punch out seven batters on the night while issuing two free passes. The Yankees jumped on him for four runs in the opening inning, capped off by a two-run double off the bat of Gleyber Torres. Paddack settled in after that until he loaded the bases to start the fifth inning and turned the ball over to the bullpen — who allowed all three inherited runners to score. The 28-year-old hurler got 12 swings and misses on 85 pitches on the night, registering a CSW of 34 percent. He’ll try to improve upon a disappointing 5.26 ERA and 1.42 WHIP when he takes on the Rockies at home on Monday. Rotoworld Wednesday, 6:45 pm

    • Red Sox move Garrett Whitlock (elbow) to 60-day IL
Red Sox transferred RHP Garrett Whitlock from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list.

Advice: Whitlock is now off the 40-man roster. The 27-year-old right-hander will miss the rest of 2024 as he underwent an internal brace procedure on his right elbow in late May. His next chance to pitch will likely come in the early portion of the 2025 campaign. Rotoworld Sunday, 8:45 am

    • Heads to 60-day IL
The Red Sox transferred Whitlock (elbow) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Sunday.

Advice: The transaction is merely a procedural move to open up a spot on the 40-man roster for infielder/outfielder Jamie Westbrook, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Worcester ahead of Sunday's game against the Tigers. Whitlock is already slated to miss the remainder of the season after he underwent an internal bracing procedure on his right elbow earlier in the week. He's expected to make a full recovery in 10-to-12 months, making it likely that he opens the 2025 season on the shelf. Rotowire.com Sunday, 7:24 am

    • Strikes out seven Friday
Assad didn't factor into the decision Friday against the Reds, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out seven.

Advice: Both of the runs charged to Assad came in the fourth inning when the Reds strung together three straight singles. Still, it was a positive effort for Assad overall after he'd given up seven runs (six earned) over 9.2 innings in his previous two outings, though he now has seven or more strikeouts in three of his last four starts. Overall, the 26-year-old right-hander is 4-1 with a 2.27 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 61:26 K:BB through 63.1 innings this season. Assad's currently in line for a rematch with Cincinnati on the road in his next start. Rotowire.com Friday, 2:51 pm

    • Javier Assad strikes out seven in no-decision
Javier Assad wasn’t involved in the decision after allowing two runs over 5 2/3 innings Friday against the Reds.

Advice: Assad struck out seven and kept the ball in the yard today after allowing two homers in each of his previous two starts. He left with a one-run lead in the sixth, but that disappeared in the seventh. He’ll face the Reds again in his next start, though it will be in Cincinnati this time. While Assad is worth using most of the time in mixed leagues right now, that’s not a great play, especially since he’s due to be matched up with Hunter Greene. Rotoworld Friday, 2:40 pm

    • Done for season after procedure
Whitlock (elbow) underwent an internal bracing procedure Thursday and will not pitch again in 2024, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports.

Advice: Whitlock avoided Tommy John reconstruction surgery and instead had an internal bracing procedure on his right elbow UCL. The surgery was performed by Dr. Jeffrey Dugas at the Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopedics Center in Birmingham, Ala. The right-hander is expected to make a full recovery, which could take between 10 and 12 months. A return at some point during the 2025 season is expected. Whitlock's 2024 season ended after four starts; he had a 1.96 ERA and 1.15 WHIP over 18.1 innings. Rotowire.com Friday, 5:01 am
