      Advice: Means got off to a rocky start, allowing a run on three hits in the first inning. However, he'd settle down and hold Seattle to just one additional run over his final five frames in an eventual 9-2 win. It was a nice bounce-back effort from Means after he gave up four runs to Arizona in just 4.2 innings his last time out. The 31-year-old southpaw lowered his ERA to 3.06 with a 0.85 WHIP and 15 strikeouts over 17.2 innings, and he has yet to issue a walk.     • John Means strikes out four in win over Mariners
      John Means logged a quality start in Friday evening’s victory over the Mariners, surrendering just two runs on six hits across six frames.

      Advice: The 31-year-old southpaw punched out four batters on the night and didn’t allow a base on balls. He allowed an RBI single to Mitch Garver in the first inning, then served up a solo blast to Dylan Moore in the fifth, but that was the extent of the damage done against him in this one. Means got 11 swings and misses on 95 pitches on the night — eight of those on his changeup — while registering a CSW of 32 percent. Through his first three starts, he now sits at 2-0 with a 3.06 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and a 15/0 K/BB ratio over 17 2/3 innings.       Steele (0-1) took the loss against the Pirates on Thursday, surrendering five runs on six hits and one walk over 5.2 innings. He struck out seven.

      Advice: The Pirates tagged Steele for two runs in the top of the first on a two-run shot from Edward Olivares and proceeded to tack on runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. The lefty produced only one 1-2-3 inning on the night and allowed at least five runs for the second consecutive start.       Justin Steele allowed six hits, five earned runs and two home runs in 5 2/3 innings and picked up the loss against the Pirates on Thursday.



      Advice: Steele struck out seven batters, but he looked shaky for his second start in a row. His ERA increased to 5.68 in his four starts this season. Steele has 18 strikeouts and a 3.78 xFIP in 19 innings this season. The 28-year-old left-hander isn’t a lost cause, but he’s certainly a tough pitcher to start against the Braves next week.

      Advice: Ryan surrendered more than three earned runs for the first time all year, as the Yankees matched that total in the first inning alone. The right-hander's struggles resulted in a shortened outing, and he failed to complete six frames for the first time since April 19.       Advice: Schmidt hasn't allowed a run in 15.2 consecutive innings dating back to his May 4 start against Detroit. The 28-year-old was utterly dominant Thursday, setting a season high in punchouts while tying his season low in hits allowed. Schmidt is well on his way to a career year -- he owns a 2.49 ERA in 50.2 innings -- as a back-end starter in one of baseball's best rotations.       Clarke Schmidt matched a career-high with eight strikeouts over eight scoreless innings on Thursday in a win over the Twins.

      Advice: Schmidt authored the strongest start of his career during Thursday afternoon’s matinee at Target Field, completing seven innings for the first time in his career, while also scattering three hits and needing just 103 pitches (69 strikes) to navigate eight nearly-flawless frames. He generated 16 swinging strikes, including 10 on his cutter alone, finishing with a robust 34 percent CSW. The 28-year-old righty has been a revelation this season for fantasy managers as a late-round steal in deeper mixed leagues. He’ll carry a sparkling 2.49 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 55/15 K/BB ratio across 50 2/3 innings (nine starts) into a home outing on Tuesday against the Mariners. Rotoworld Thursday, 12:30 pm

      Joe Ryan was charged with four runs over 5 1/3 innings on Thursday in a loss to the Yankees.

      Advice: Ryan surrendered six hits, including a leadoff homer to Anthony Volpe, and was simply out-dueled by Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt, who reeled off eight shutout frames against Minnesota’s lineup. He finished with five strikeouts and only handed out one free pass. He’ll bring a solid 3.57 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 58/7 K/BB ratio across 53 innings (nine starts) into a road tilt on Tuesday against the Nationals. Rotoworld Thursday, 12:30 pm
       
    • Fans seven but takes loss
      Houck (3-5) took the loss against Tampa Bay on Wednesday, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out seven batters over 5.2 innings.

      Advice: Houck made it through three scoreless frames before giving up an unearned run in the fourth. The right-hander had a 2-1 lead when he exited with two outs and two runners on base in the sixth, but Greg Weissert gave up consecutive hits in relief to saddle Houck with two more runs (only one of which was earned) along with the loss. Despite the defeat, Houck gave Boston a solid chunk of innings again -- he's completed at least 5.2 frames in each of his nine outings this season.
