  • Ryne Nelson won’t start Wednesday for D-backs
    The Diamondbacks will likely bypass Ryne Nelson and go with an opener in Wednesday’s game against the Dodgers.

    Advice: Nelson was lit up for seven runs by the Tigers last time out, putting his spot in jeopardy, but when everything was quiet over the last few days, it seemed likely that he’d remain in the rotation.   • Joc Pederson puts Dodgers away with homer
    Joc Pederson went 2-for-5 and hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning Tuesday as the Diamondbacks defeated the Dodgers 7-3.

    Advice: Arizona was up 4-3 when Pederson homered off Michael Grove to put the game away. It was Pederson’s sixth homer.   • Gavin Stone charged with four runs in loss
    Gavin Stone lost to the Diamondbacks after allowing four runs in six innings on Tuesday.

    Advice: Stone came up a little short of delivering a fifth straight quality start and took his first loss since April 7. He gave up eight hits, walked one and struck out five in falling to 4-2 with a 3.60 ERA.   • Breaks home run drought
    McGuire went 2-for-3 with a solo home run during Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Rays.

    Advice: McGuire went yard in the ninth inning off of Erasmo Ramirez, marking the catchers' third homer of the season and his first since April 7. McGuire has been operating as the backup to Connor Wong in May, and he hasn't shown enough at the plate to warrant more playing time since, batting .214 with Tuesday's long ball being his only extra-base hit during the month.   • Abraham Toro hits go-ahead homer in eighth
    Abraham Toro hit a go-ahead homer in the bottom of the eighth Tuesday as the A’s came back to defeat the Rockies 5-4.

    Advice: Toro’s blast came after Seth Brown tied the game with a two-run homer in the seventh. Toro, who was supposed to become a reserve due to the J.D. Davis acquisition at the end of the spring, has won back his job by hitting .294/.344/.459 in 183 plate appearances.   • Aaron Brooks delivers quality start versus Rockies
    Aaron Brooks gave the A’s another quality start by allowing three runs in six innings Tuesday at home against the Rockies.

    Advice: This is definitely pushing the boundaries of the quality start; not only did he do the bare minimum in allowing three runs in six innings, but he was doing so against the road-team version of the Rockies in a strong pitcher’s park in Oakland.   • Cal Quantrill strikes out eight against A’s
    Cal Quantrill yielded two runs in six innings and struck out eight against the A’s on Tuesday.

    Advice: The Rockies ought to be shopping Quantrill now; it’s hard to imagine he’ll have more trade value at the deadline than he does currently with his 3.59 ERA and a 44/21 K/BB ratio in 57 2/3 innings.   • Justin Lawrence takes blown save in seventh inning
    Justin Lawrence took a blown save in the seventh after giving up a two-run homer to Oakland’s Seth Brown on Tuesday.

    Advice: Jalen Beeks’ hold on the closer’s role in Colorado got a little stronger tonight. Lawrence, who has been dealing with an inflated ERA since giving up four earned runs in his second outing of the season, had been pitching well in amassing a 1.08 ERA this month.   • Ezequiel Tovar homers twice against A’s
    Ezequiel Tovar hit a pair of solo homers Tuesday in a losing cause against the A’s.

    Advice: In spite of his willingness to swing at anything and everything, Tovar has managed to hit .279/.313/.468 this season. His second homer today, projected at 443 feet, was the second longest of his career and easily the longest among those to come away from Coors Field.
