    • On bench Friday
Valdez is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the White Sox, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Advice: Valdez will dodge a matchup with southpaw Garrett Crochet, giving way to Jamie Westbrook at second base Friday. Since Vaughn Grissom (hamstring) got hurt on June 1, Valdez is 7-for-20 with three homers, eight RBI and one strikeout. Rotowire.com 6 minutes ago
    • Absent from lineup versus lefty
Naylor is not in the lineup for Friday's game in Miami.

Advice: With southpaw Ryan Weathers on the hill for the Marlins, the left-handed hitting Naylor will start this one on the bench. Austin Hedges will do the catching for Logan Allen. Rotowire.com 9 minutes ago

    • Max Scherzer (thumb) to make rehab start Sunday
Max Scherzer will make a rehab start for Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday.

Advice: It will be interesting to see how quickly the Rangers let Scherzer return from the minors. The 39-year-old has made a total of six minor league rehab starts during his 16-year career and never more than two during one IL stay. One would think a typical pitcher would get three or four in his situation (he missed the entire spring after back surgery and then made rehab start in April before injuring his thumb). Scherzer, though, is hardly typical. Rotoworld 10 minutes ago

    • Idle Friday
Smith is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the White Sox, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Advice: Smith was busy in the Red Sox's 14-2 win Thursday, reaching safely on four occasions. He'll get the day off against lefty Garrett Crochet, with Bobby Dalbec filling in at first and batting eighth. Rotowire.com 10 minutes ago

    • Resuming rehab assignment Sunday
Scherzer (back/arm) will resume a rehab assignment with Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.

Advice: Scherzer had to be pulled off his initial rehab assignment in early May following a nerve problem with his throwing arm, but he's been trending in the right direction in recent weeks after receiving a cortisone injection. The 39-year-old was initially placed on the injured list due to his recovery from offseason back surgery. Scherzer threw 40 pitches in a live batting practice session earlier this week, so he should be ready for at least that many pitches Sunday. He will need multiple rehab starts before rejoining the Rangers' rotation, but a return before the end of June would seem to be in play. Rotowire.com 12 minutes ago

    • Shut down from throwing
Reds manager David Bell said Friday that Williamson (shoulder) will be shut down from throwing for at least seven days and is evaluating his potential options, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Advice: The left-hander was pulled off his rehab assignment due to persistent issues with his shoulder, and he'll stop throwing entirely for at least a brief period. Williamson has yet to pitch for the Reds this season due to the shoulder sprain, and it's now questionable whether he'll be able to return ahead of the All-Star break in mid-July. • Activated, staying at Triple-A
Thompson (illness) was activated from the 15-day injured list Friday and was optioned to Triple-A Iowa, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Advice: Thompson has been recovering from a viral illness since mid-May and was rehabbing with Triple-A Iowa this week. While he's over the illness, he'll stick around in the minors, where he started this season. He appeared in three games at Iowa as part of his recovery, yielding one run on three hits with six Ks over 4.2 innings. Rotowire.com 13 minutes ago
    • Cubs activate, demote Keegan Thompson
Cubs activated RHP Keegan Thompson from the 15-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Iowa.

Advice: Keegan had been out with a viral illness since May 15. He has a 4.97 ERA in 12 2/3 innings out of the pen for the Cubs this season. Rotoworld 16 minutes ago
    • Hits bench Friday
Crow-Armstrong is not in the lineup for Friday's game in Cincinnati.

Advice: Tough southpaw Nick Lodolo is starting for the Reds, so the lefty-hitting Crow-Armstrong will begin the contest on the bench. The rookie outfielder has now started just two of the last five games, with two of those coming against lefties. Cody Bellinger will be in center field for the Cubs on Friday.
