  • Matt Waldron knuckles his way to third win
    Matt Waldron struck out eight over seven innings Tuesday in the Padres’ 4-0 shutout of the Marlins.

    Advice: He moved to 3-5 with a 4.26 ERA. Waldron threw his knuckleball 27% of the time last season and was at 36% percent this season coming into the night. Against the Marlins, though, he used it a career-high 55% of the time and induced 11 of his 15 missed swings on the night. We’re still not overly impressed by the pitch, but the league is awfully unfamiliar at dealing with knuckleballs these days.   • Ben Brown no-hits the Brewers for seven innings
    Ben Brown pitched seven innings of no-hit ball in the Cubs’ win over the Brewers on Tuesday.

    Advice: Brown was excellent in this one. The righty needed just 41 pitches to get through the first four innings and struck out six of the first 12 batters he faced to start the game. His two walks allowed were his lone blemishes on the evening, but Brown has now allowed just two hits in his last 13 innings pitched while boasting a 19/5 K/BB ratio. Brown lowered his ERA to 2.72 on the season but was robbed of his second win after Hector Neris blew a save opportunity in the ninth.   • Sharp vs. Reds
    Gibson (4-2) earned the win Tuesday over Cincinnati, allowing one run on two hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out six.

    Advice: Gibson was excellent Tuesday, as he held the Reds to one hit until Will Benson ended his shutout bid with a homer in the sixth inning. The 36-year-old Gibson has held opponents to two earned runs or fewer in eight of his last nine outings. He's lowered his ERA to 3.60 with a 1.22 WHIP and 52:25 K:BB across 11 starts (65 innings) this year. Gibson's currently in line for a road matchup with the Astros in his next outing early next week.   • Pavin Smith doubles, drives in one in loss
    Pavin Smith went 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI in Tuesday’s loss to the Rangers.

    Advice: Smith doubled off Nathan Eovaldi in the second inning to drive in Christian Walker and give the Diamondbacks an early 1-0 lead. Smith has now tallied four hits in his last 13 at-bats and is well off the fantasy radar at this time. Rotoworld Today, 7:26 pm

  • Miguel Vargas connects for first homer in victory
    Miguel Vargas slugged a solo homer to lead the Dodgers to a 3-0 win in the second game of Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Mets.

    Advice: Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has been reluctant to give Vargas opportunities so far as he made just his third start in this one since being summoned back on May 17 from Triple-A Oklahoma City. He connected for his first round-tripper of the season when he took Mets starter José Quintana deep in the sixth inning. The 24-year-old should probably get a longer look in Los Angeles, but it doesn’t sound like that’s in the cards at the moment, unless he’s going to force them to keep his bat in the lineup.   • Alex Vesia notches six-out save against Mets
    Alex Vesia recorded a six-out save on Tuesday against the Mets.

    Advice: Vesia got the call to protect a three-run lead during the second half of Tuesday’s doubleheader at Citi Field and needed just 30 pitches (16 strikes) to record the final six outs. It was his second save of the season. There won’t be a ton of save chances for the 28-year-old lefty moving forward with closer Evan Phillips likely to return later this week from the injured list.   • Jake Irvin gets tough luck no decision on Tuesday
    Jake Irvin threw six shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out 10 in a no-decision against the Braves.

    Advice: Irvin kept the Braves guessing all night, allowing an average exit velocity against of just 80 mph while posting a 28 percent whiff rate and 27 percent CSW. His curve was particularly effective on Tuesday, and the right-hander now has a 3.43 ERA on the year. He does have just 54 strikeouts in 63 innings, so he doesn’t have the strikeout upside that tonight’s game would indicate, but he’s been solid all season long and could be a decent streaming option against the Guardians this weekend.   • Kyle Gibson keeps Reds bats in check in win
    Kyle Gibson allowed just one run on two hits in six innings in a win over the Reds on Tuesday.

    Advice: Gibson struck out six and walked one and the only real damage was a solo home run to Will Benson in the sixth inning. The 36-year-old posted an impressive 15 whiffs for a 34 percent whiff rate and 34 percent CSW. Gibson used all six of his pitches on the night, and had a 38 percent whiff rate on the sweeper while his cutter pounded the strike zone for a 41 percent CSW. The veteran now has a 3.60 ERA on the season but gets a tough start on the road against the Astros next week. Rotoworld Today, 6:23 pm
     
  • Rockies outright Matt Koch to Triple-A
    Rockies sent RHP Matt Koch outright to Triple-A Albuquerque.

    Advice: Koch unsurprisingly went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment last week by Colorado. The 33-year-old righty could wind up electing free agency, but will likely stick around as extra organizational depth. Rotoworld Today, 5:06 pm
