• Disastrous first rehab start
Boyle (back) started Triple-A Las Vegas' loss to the Rainiers on Thursday and allowed four earned runs on three hits and two walks without recording an out.

Advice: Boyle's final line encapsulates how forgettable his 26-pitch outing went, with the right-hander locating only half of those offerings for strikes before getting the hook. The one silver lining appears to be that Boyle didn't have any physical issues stemming from the outing, but given the on-field results, he'll almost certainly draw another start for the Aviators before activation is considered. • Braves recall Ray Kerr for start Friday
Braves recalled LHP Ray Kerr from Triple-A Gwinnett.

Advice: Kerr will start Friday night’s game against the Pirates. The 29-year-old left-hander has a 2.89 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in four appearances out of the bullpen with Atlanta this season. The Braves need a fresh arm and while Kerr was optioned on Monday, he didn’t appear in any games for Gwinnett. Rotoworld 25 minutes ago

  • Braves place Smith-Shawver (oblique) on IL
Braves placed RHP AJ Smith-Shawver on the 15-day injured list with a left oblique strain.

Advice: Smith-Shawver has a strained left oblique muscle. He was just recalled and made his first start of the season for the Braves on Thursday. Smith-Shawver shutout the Cubs for 4 1/3 innings in his debut. Rotoworld 33 minutes ago
  • Promoted, starting Friday
Atlanta recalled Kerr from Triple-A Gwinnett to start Friday's game at Pittsburgh.

Advice: The left-hander was optioned to Gwinnett following Monday's twin bill against the Padres but will be allowed to quickly rejoin the big club as AJ Smith-Shawver (oblique) lands on the injured list. Kerr's four appearances for Atlanta this season have all come out of the bullpen, but he's pitched well with a 2.89 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 10:0 K:BB across 9.1 innings. He threw 64 pitches over 3.1 frames in his last outing and figures to face some minor workload limitations since that was his longest outing of the campaign. Rotowire.com 40 minutes ago

  • Lands on IL with oblique strain
Atlanta placed Smith-Shawver on the 15-day injured list Friday with a strained left oblique.

Advice: Smith-Shawver struck out four over 4.1 scoreless innings in a spot start versus the Cubs on Thursday but evidently suffere an oblique injury in the process. It's not clear at this point how long he might be sidelined, but oblique strains generally require longer than a minimum stay on the IL. Smith-Shawver might head back to Triple-A Gwinnett once he's healthy, though it could depend on Atlanta's rotation needs at the time. Rotowire.com 43 minutes ago
  • Twins call up Jorge Alcala from Triple-A
Twins recalled RHP Jorge Alcala from Triple-A St. Paul.

Advice: Alcala is back with the Twins again. In eight major league games this season, the 28-year-old right-hander has a 3.27 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, 10 strikeouts and zero home runs allowed. Rotoworld 55 minutes ago

  • Rejoins bullpen
The Twins recalled Alcala from Triple-A St. Paul on Friday, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.

Advice: The club had previously optioned Caleb Boushley and now have announced Alcala as his replacement on the roster and in the bullpen. In eight appearances this season, Alcala has collected a 3.27 ERA and 10:6 K:BB. He figures to be utilized in middle relief. Rotowire.com Today, 8:43 am

  • Picks up second hold
Pop worked a scoreless seventh inning Thursday to record his second hold of the season in a win over the Tigers.

Advice: Entering the game to protect a two-run lead, Pop needed only seven pitches (six strikes) to set down the middle of Detroit's batting order. The right-hander has been effective since his promotion in late April, posting a 3.60 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 7:1 K:BB in 10 innings, but he could be the pitcher who gets bumped out of the big-league bullpen when Chad Green (shoulder) comes off the IL. • Nabs first win
Lee (1-1) picked up the win Thursday over the Cubs, striking out one in a scoreless inning of relief.

Advice: AJ Smith-Shawver got the start but lasted only 4.1 innings, handing the ball off to Lee in the fifth inning to continue what proved to be a combined shutout for Atlanta. Lee has been impressive in a low-leverage role this season, posting a 1.21 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 20:7 K:BB through 22.1 innings, but he has just one win and two holds in 14 appearances.
