    Boyle (back) started Triple-A Las Vegas' loss to the Rainiers on Thursday and allowed four earned runs on three hits and two walks without recording an out.

    Advice: Boyle's final line encapsulates how forgettable his 26-pitch outing went, with the right-hander locating only half of those offerings for strikes before getting the hook. The one silver lining appears to be that Boyle didn't have any physical issues stemming from the outing, but given the on-field results, he'll almost certainly draw another start for the Aviators before activation is considered.   • Braves recall Ray Kerr for start Friday
    Braves recalled LHP Ray Kerr from Triple-A Gwinnett.

    Advice: Kerr will start Friday night’s game against the Pirates. The 29-year-old left-hander has a 2.89 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in four appearances out of the bullpen with Atlanta this season.     Braves placed RHP AJ Smith-Shawver on the 15-day injured list with a left oblique strain.

    Atlanta recalled Kerr from Triple-A Gwinnett to start Friday's game at Pittsburgh.

    Advice: The left-hander was optioned to Gwinnett following Monday's twin bill against the Padres but will be allowed to quickly rejoin the big club as AJ Smith-Shawver (oblique) lands on the injured list. Kerr's four appearances for Atlanta this season have all come out of the bullpen, but he's pitched well with a 2.89 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 10:0 K:BB across 9.1 innings.     Advice: Smith-Shawver struck out four over 4.1 scoreless innings in a spot start versus the Cubs on Thursday but evidently suffere an oblique injury in the process. It's not clear at this point how long he might be sidelined, but oblique strains generally require longer than a minimum stay on the IL. The right-hander has been effective since his promotion in late April, posting a 3.60 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 7:1 K:BB in 10 innings, but he could be the pitcher who gets bumped out of the big-league bullpen when Chad Green (shoulder) comes off the IL. Lee has been impressive in a low-leverage role this season, posting a 1.21 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 20:7 K:BB through 22.1 innings, but he has just one win and two holds in 14 appearances.
