  • Nabs first win since 2022
    Stripling (1-5) picked up the win Wednesday, scattering three hits over six scoreless innings in a 4-0 victory over the Pirates. He struck out two without walking a batter.

    Advice: It's been a long drought for Stripling, who prior to Wednesday had collected his last big-league win on the last day of the 2022 season while with the Blue Jays. The quality start was the second of the 2024 campaign for the right-hander, and he's allowed three runs or less in four straight outings. Despite his poor record, Stripling will take a respectable 4.24 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 27:8 K:BB through 40.1 innings into his next start, which is scheduled to come at home early next week against the Rangers.   • Hurt by long ball in quality start
    Priester (0-2) took the loss Wednesday as the Pirates were downed 4-0 by the A's, giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits and four walks over six innings. He struck out three.

    Advice: The 23-year-old battled both his control and his command, throwing only 59 of 97 pitches for strikes and serving up homers to Abraham Toro in the second inning and Tyler Nevin in the third. Priester still managed to put together his second straight quality start, and through three outings since his promotion he's delivered a solid 3.31 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 11:6 K:BB through 16.1 innings. His time in the Pittsburgh rotation could be running short though, with top prospect Paul Skenes getting stretched out to six innings in his last start for Triple-A Indianapolis.     Bassitt (2-5) took the loss Wednesday, giving up three runs on four hits and a walk over six innings as the Blue Jays fell 6-1 to the Royals. He struck out four.

    Advice: The veteran righty took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but a leadoff double by Kyle Isbel kicked off a three-run frame for Kansas City, and with Seth Lugo also pitching extremely well, Bassitt had no margin for error. He tossed 62 of 92 pitches for strikes in his third quality start of the season, but Bassitt will carry a shaky 5.45 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 34:18 K:BB through 36.1 innings into his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road next week in Philadelphia.     Lugo (5-1) picked up the win Wednesday in a 6-1 victory over the Blue Jays, allowing one run on two hits and two walks over seven innings. He struck out eight.

    Advice: The 34-year-old right-hander generated an impressive 35 called or swinging strikes over 101 pitches as he baffled Toronto hitters. The quality start was Lugo's sixth in seven trips to the mound, and the two-year, $30 million contract he signed in December is looking like an absolute bargain for the Royals.     Cruz (1-2) took the loss against the Padres on Wednesday. He allowed four runs on three hits and a walk while striking out one over a third of an inning.

    Advice: Cruz entered to start the seventh inning of a 2-2 game but surrendered two singles and a walk before Jake Cronenworth belted a grand slam. The right-hander faced one more batter, striking out Manny Machado, before departing. Other than Wednesday's effort and another in which he walked three batters, Cruz has pitched well over 13 outings. He entered Wednesday with a 1.59 ERA with 21 strikeouts over 11.1 innings.     Gallen (hamstring) is the projected starter for next Tuesday's game against the Reds.

    Advice: Gallen was removed from his previous start due to a hamstring injury but was in line to take his next turn this week. There is no issue with the hamstring; Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo opted instead to take advantage of upcoming days off in the schedule to give Gallen extra time.     Advice: Walston, a starter at Triple-A Reno who made his major-league debut Wednesday, was recalled earlier in the day following Tuesday's surprise bullpen effort that left the club in need of a fresh arm. His length was needed immediately, as starter Jordan Montgomery was ambushed by the Dodgers early. Walston navigated around a walk and two hits over three scoreless frames before running into trouble in the seventh inning.     Clase earned the save over the Astros on Wednesday, striking out one over a perfect 10th inning.

    Advice: Clase entered the contest with a one-run lead in the bottom of the 10th and needed only five pitches to retire the side and secure his ninth save of the season. The right-hander has now converted each of his last five save attempts (over nine appearances), posting a 10:1 K:BB over that stretch.     Verlander pitched seven innings in a no-decision against the Guardians on Wednesday, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out two.

    Advice: Verlander allowed the leadoff man to reach in four of his seven innings of work, but managed to limit the damage to only two runs, both of which came across in the top of the fifth. The veteran right-hander struggled to get ahead in the count for much of the contest and has now issued at least three walks in back-to-back starts, though he's still held opposing teams to two or fewer runs in all three outings to open the campaign.
