• Steele rocked again on Thursday
Justin Steele allowed six hits, five earned runs and two home runs in 5 ⅔ innings and picked up the loss against the Pirates on Thursday.

Advice: Steele struck out seven batters, but he looked shaky for his second start in a row. His ERA increased to 5.68 in his four starts this season. Steele has 18 strikeouts and a 3.78 xFIP in 19 innings this season. The 28-year-old left-hander isn’t a lost cause, but he’s certainly a tough pitcher to start against the Braves next week.

  • Jones with another quality start Thursday
Jared Jones allowed three earned runs, struck out seven in six innings and picked up the win in the Pirates’ 5-4 victory against the Cubs on Thursday.

Advice: Jones was top notch once again and earned his third win of the season. He induced 15 whiffs and had a 29 percent CSW on the night. His ERA is 2.89 on the season. Jones is pretty easily a top 20 starting pitcher for the rest of the season. The 22-year-old right-hander is set to face the Giants at home in his next start.

  • Tagged up by Yankees
Ryan (2-3) took the loss Thursday against the Yankees, allowing four runs on six hits and a walk during 5.1 innings. He struck out five.

Advice: Ryan surrendered more than three earned runs for the first time all year, as the Yankees matched that total in the first inning alone. The right-hander's struggles resulted in a shortened outing, failing to complete six frames for the first time since April 19. Ryan owns a 3.86 ERA and a 28:4 K:BB in 30.1 innings over his last five starts. He's lined up to face the Nationals in Washington on Tuesday. Rotowire.com Today, 6:55 pm

  • Twirls eight scoreless
Schmidt (5-1) earned the win Thursday against Minnesota, allowing three hits and no walks during eight scoreless innings. He struck out eight.

Advice: Schmidt hasn't allowed a run in 15.2 consecutive innings, dating back to his May 4 start against Detroit. The 28-year-old was utterly dominant Thursday, setting a season high in punchouts while tying his season low in hits allowed. Schmidt's well on his way to a career year -- owning a 2.49 ERA in 50.2 innings -- as a back-end starter in one of baseball's best rotations. He'll look to extend his scoreless inning streak in a projected start Tuesday against Seattle. Rotowire.com Today, 6:46 pm

  • Jeffrey Springs (elbow) faces hitters Wednesday
Jeffrey Springs (elbow) faced hitters on Wednesday in a live batting practice session.

Advice: Springs is slated to pitch in a Rookie-level Florida Complex League contest on Monday in his next outing. The 31-year-old lefty is working his way back from last year’s Tommy John surgery and could be an option for Tampa Bay’s starting rotation sometime around midseason. Rotoworld Today, 5:23 pm

  • Gavin Williams (elbow) throws 50-pitch bullpen
Gavin Williams (elbow) threw a 50-pitch bullpen session on Wednesday.

Advice: The positive news here is that Williams didn’t experience any discomfort in his first bullpen session since receiving an anti-inflammatory injection earlier this month to address right elbow discomfort. He’s scheduled to throw another bullpen session on Friday before the club determines his next steps. Rotoworld Today, 5:18 pm

  • Shane Baz (elbow) fills up strike zone on Thursday
Shane Baz (elbow) allowed one run over 3 1/3 innings on Thursday for Triple-A Durham.

Advice: Baz struck out three and only issued a pair of walks. He generated only five swinging strikes, but was able to locate the strike zone effectively, throwing a whopping 49 of 69 pitches for strikes. It was a much-needed improvement after handing out five free passes his last time out. The 24-year-old former top pitching prospect remains without a definitive timetable to return to Tampa Bay’s starting rotation as he continues to build up his pitch count and stamina in the minors. • Early exit from Thursday's start
Walker exited Thursday's start against the Mets after being struck in the left foot by a line drive, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Walker had completed 3.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out only one. It's unclear if the injury will affect his ability to take his next turn through the rotation, but he'll likely undergo imaging on either Thursday night or Friday. Rotowire.com Today, 4:44 pm
