    • Paul Sewald (oblique) expected to return Tuesday
Paul Sewald (oblique) is expected to be activated from the injured list ahead of Tuesday’s series opener against the Reds.

Advice: The 33-year-old right-hander has been shelved since the end of March due to a left oblique strain, but is finally ready to make his mark on the 2024 season. That means that Kevin Ginkel’s hold on the closer’s role will come to an end after the D’Backs’ weekend series against the Padres. Rotoworld Today, 3:28 pm

    • Could return for road trip
Diamondbacks manager Torrey Lovullo said Friday that Sewald (oblique) is expected back Tuesday for Arizona's road trip, John Gambadoro of ArizonaSports.com reports.

Advice: Sewald's rehab program was paused after the right-hander experienced soreness from his appearance with Triple-A Reno earlier this week. He returned to action with a bullpen session Wednesday, and the right-hander is slated to pitch in an extended game Saturday, per Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com. If all goes well, Sewald could be back with the team as soon as Tuesday in Cincinnati. Sewald registered 34 saves last season, posting a 3.12 ERA and 1.15 WHIP over 60.2 innings with Arizona and Seattle. Rotowire.com Today, 3:24 pm

    • Assad struggles to miss bats in no decision
Javier Assad allowed one run on five hits in five innings in a no-decision against the Mets on Tuesday.

Advice: Assad didn’t walk a batter on the night, but he had just one strikeout, a seven percent whiff rate, and a 17 percent CSW. He had just three whiffs on 45 swings in the game and all three of them came on version of a fastball. Assad doesn’t have overpowering stuff, but he can mix and match the shapes and movement on his fastball and has a deep six-pitch arsenal that keeps hitters off balance. That worked tonight and it’s worked for much of the season as evidenced by his 1.97 ERA, but it’s a risky tightrope to walk. He’s still worth starting in most formats while he’s going well, but he can possibly be benched in shallower leagues with weekend against the Brewers. Rotoworld Tuesday, 8:20 pm

    • Stingy in no-decision Tuesday
Assad came away with a no-decision in Tuesday's 4-2 loss to the Mets, allowing one run on five hits over five innings. He struck out one without walking a batter.

Advice: The 26-year-old righty didn't allow much hard contact, as all five hits off him were singles, and Assad tossed 55 of 78 pitches for strikes before leaving the mound with the score tied 1-1. He's had an impressive start to his campaign, and Assad will take a 1.97 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 27:9 K:BB through 32 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come at home this weekend against the Brewers. • Throwing side session Wednesday
Sewald (oblique) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Wednesday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

Advice: Sewald's last bullpen session, which was scheduled for Sunday, was put on hold after he experienced soreness following an appearance for Triple-A Reno. However, it's positive news that he's been cleared to toss a side session later in the week. The team will likely determine Sewald's next steps after his upcoming bullpen. • Reed Garrett gets fifth win against Cardinals
Reed Garrett got his fifth win after allowing only an unearned run between the 10th and 11th innings Sunday against the Cardinals.

Advice: The automatic runner scored in the 11th, but that didn’t prove to be a problem, since the Mets came back with three in the bottom of the inning. Garrett is now tied for the major league lead in wins with Tyler Glasnow, Ranger Suárez and fellow reliever A.J. Minter. He has a 27/6 K/BB ratio in 14 2/3 innings. Rotoworld Sunday, 2:36 pm

    • Earns league-leading ninth save
Foley allowed one hit and one walk over one scoreless frame to earn the save Sunday against the Royals. He struck out two.

Advice: Foley kept things interesting by allowing the first two batters he faced to reach but induced a groundout followed by two strikeouts to join four other relievers with his league-leading ninth save in as many opportunities. The Tigers' closer lowered his ERA to 1.38 with a 1.23 WHIP and 13 strikeouts across 13 innings. Rotowire.com Sunday, 2:32 pm
    • Jason Foley escapes with save on Sunday
Jason Foley pitched around two baserunners to earn a save in the Tigers’ 4-1 win over the Royals on Sunday.

Advice: Foley was called on to protect the three-run lead and immediately walked a batter and allowed a single. However, he was able to pitch himself out of trouble with a ground out and back-to-back strikeouts. The right-hander now has a 1.38 ERA and nine saves on the season. Rotoworld Sunday, 1:52 pm
    • Paul Sewald scheduled to throw bullpen Wednesday
Paul Sewald (oblique) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday.

Advice: The Diamondbacks announced on Saturday that Sewald was having his rehab slowed a bit due to renewed soreness, but it sounds like it’s only a minor issue. He’s still probably going to need another appearance or two in rehab games before he’s cleared to return, but it’s not all doom and gloom for the Diamondbacks’ closer. Rotoworld Sunday, 1:41 pm
