      Advice: With Mookie Betts (hand) set to miss several weeks, Ohtani could see most of his work out of the leadoff spot -- he's now slotted in there for both games that Betts has missed so far this season. Ohtani certainly possesses qualities of a leadoff man with a .314 average, .388 OBP and 16 thefts on the campaign, though his power far exceeds what is usually expected from a batter in that role. Ohtani could lose some RBI opportunities with Betts not hitting ahead of him for the foreseeable future, but the Japanese superstar is more than capable of knocking himself in and should continue to get opportunities to score with Will Smith and Freddie Freeman batting behind him.       Advice: After serving up homers in each of his last two appearances, Bednar got back on track with a clean frame Monday. Bednar had a disastrous start to the season with 14 earned runs allowed in his first 13 outings, but he's turned it around with a 1.88 ERA over his last 19.1 innings.       David Bednar tossed a perfect frame on Monday against the Reds to record his 15th save of the season.

      Advice: Bednar was summoned to protect a three-run lead in the final frame and required just 11 pitches (eight strikes) to spin a flawless frame. It was a nice rebound effort for the 29-year-old stopper after giving up solo homers in each of his previous two appearances. He’s converted 15 of his 18 save opportunities on the year. The 27-year-old has now gone deeper than six innings in three straight starts and has walked merely one batter across his last 33.2 innings. He's tied with Corbin Burnes and Tanner Houck for the league lead with 12 quality starts and paces MLB with 98.1 innings pitched.       Astros general manager Dana Brown said Sunday that Verlander (neck) could pitch either Wednesday or Thursday against the White Sox in Houston, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

      Advice: Manager Joe Espada suggested earlier in the day that Verlander could rejoin the rotation for the Chicago series, and Brown's comments help further narrow down a potential return date for the 41-year-old righty. Verlander was unable to make his scheduled start Saturday versus the Tigers after experiencing neck discomfort during his bullpen session Wednesday, prompting the Astros to push both Spencer Arrighetti and Ronel Blanco ahead in the pitching schedule. The extra rest appears to have done Verlander some good, as he was able to play catch prior to Sunday's series finale with Detroit.       Logan Gilbert allowed two hits and walked none over eight innings in the Mariners’ 5-0 shutout of the Rangers on Sunday.

      Advice: Gilbert recorded 21 whiffs and nine strikeouts in one of the best outings of his still rather young career. He’s 12-for-15 giving the Mariners quality starts this year, which would seem to warrant better than 4-4 record. His 2.93 ERA ranks 15th in the majors, but his 0.92 WHIP places fifth.
