      Kimbrel (4-1) picked up the win in Saturday's 5-4 extra-innings victory over the Diamondbacks, striking out one in a scoreless 11th inning.

      Advice: He hit Christian Walker with his first pitch of the frame, but Kimbrel quickly escaped the jam by fanning Jake McCarthy and then inducing a double-play grounder from Eugenio Suarez. The veteran reliever then got rewarded when Jordan Westburg walked it off in the bottom of the inning. Yennier Cano worked the ninth inning at home in a tie game -- usage normally reserved for a team's closer -- while Danny Coulombe handled the 10th, so Kimbrel may not be back in the top spot in the O's bullpen just yet, but efforts like this should help him get there.       Javier (2-1) took the loss against Detroit on Saturday, allowing seven runs on five hits and four walks with no strikeouts over 1.1 innings.

      Advice: Javier was activated off the injured list Saturday to make his first start for the Astros since April 14, but the right-hander didn't look quite right in his return. In addition to getting knocked around for seven runs and throwing only 21 of 50 pitches for strikes, Javier's final two fastballs clocked in at 89.7 mph and 90.2 mph, well below this typical velocity, as Chandler Rome of The Athletic notes. It's unclear whether his struggles Saturday are an indication that Javier isn't fully recovered from the neck issue that originally sidelined him or if he was simply rusty, but he's currently penciled in to make his next start at home against Oakland.     • Cristian Javier demolished in return from IL
      Cristian Javier was absolutely demolished in his return from the injured list on Saturday, giving up seven runs on five hits and four walks in just 1 1/3 innings of work.

      Advice: Yikes. None of the four outs that Javier did record came via the strikeout. He pitched around a couple of baserunners in the opening inning, but the second inning wasn’t as forgiving. There, Mark Canha belted a grand slam and Kerry Carpenter added a two-run shot that chased Javier from the ballgame. He threw 50 pitches (21 for strikes), getting just two swings and misses while posting a CSW of only 16 percent. Perhaps fantasy managers should take a wait-and-see approach before putting him back into lineups. Javier will do battle against the Athletics his next time out at home on Thursday.       The Astros reinstated Javier (neck) from the 15-day injured list Saturday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

      Advice: Javier landed on the IL on April 21 due to neck discomfort. He made one rehab start with Double-A Corpus Christi on May 4, throwing 68 pitches while allowing three runs on three hits and two walks over 3.1 innings. To make room on the 40-man roster for Javier, Houston designated right-hander Brandon Bielak for assignment.       Orioles manager Brandon Hyde told reporters Saturday that he’s not sure when Craig Kimbrel will return to the closer role.

      Advice: Kimbrel pitched the seventh inning on Friday against the Diamondbacks and it certainly appears that the Orioles are set on giving him some lower-leverage situations to get back on track before they consider putting him back in the ninth inning role.     • Max Scherzer (thumb) receives cortisone injection
      Max Scherzer received a cortisone injection in his right thumb on Wednesday.

      Advice: Scherzer underwent additional testing earlier this week that revealed his thumb issue to be nerve-related, not structural. It’s an encouraging development that he’s reportedly experiencing significant improvement following the additional treatment. The 39-year-old righty was able to resume playing catch on Friday without any issues. He’ll presumably need a couple rehab outings before making it back to the Rangers’ starting rotation mix.       Scherzer (back) revealed Friday that he received a cortisone injection in his right thumb after undergoing additional tests Wednesday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.

      Advice: The exam revealed that Scherzer's thumb issue is more nerve-related than skeletal, and the right-hander noticed significant improvement following the injection. Scherzer noted that he passed multiple strength tests that would have indicated a ligament issue, and his rehab plan has changed accordingly.       Houck (3-4) took the loss Friday as the Red Sox fell 5-1 to the Nationals, giving up three runs on six hits and a walk over seven innings. He struck out four.

      Advice: The right-hander pitched well and gave Boston another quality start, Houck's fifth straight and seventh in eight outings this season, but his offense let him down.
