      Advice: Although Manaea wasn't rewarded with the win, Tuesday's start marked his first time going deeper than six innings this season and was his third straight outing without surrendering a home run. The southpaw owns a 3.67 ERA across 83.1 innings, which would be his best since 2019, and has allowed only five earned runs in his last 22.2 innings pitched.     • Falters versus Dodgers
      Sewald (0-1) took the loss and a blown save Tuesday versus the Dodgers, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out two in two-thirds of an inning.

      Advice: Sewald's 15.2-inning scoreless streak came to an end, and he also took his first blown save of the year. He labored in the ninth inning and ended up giving up a game-tying double to Freddie Freeman, who then scored on Teoscar Hernandez's walk-off single. Sewald is now 11-for-12 in save chances while sporting a 1.56 ERA, 0.63 WHIP and 17:3 K:BB through 17.1 innings. He is unlikely to lose the closer job as long as he's with Arizona, though he's on a one-year contract for a struggling team and could be flipped before the July 30 trade deadline.       Shohei Ohtani clobbered his 27th home run of the season on Tuesday night as the Dodgers rallied to defeat the Diamondbacks.

      Advice: Ohtani led off the home half of the first inning with a double and scored the game’s first run on an RBI double off the bat of Teoscar Hernandez. He then flipped the game in the Dodgers’ favor with a mammoth 433-foot (112.0 mph EV) two-run shot off of Justin Martinez in the seventh inning that made it a 4-3 ballgame.     • Paul Sewald suffers blown save against Dodgers
      Paul Sewald suffered his first blown save of the season on Tuesday night, allowing two runs on three hits over 2/3 innings against the Dodgers.

      Advice: The 34-year-old stopper was called upon to protect a one-run lead in the ninth inning. He started off the inning by striking out Gavin Lux and Shohei Ohtani, but things got interesting as Will Smith smacked a two-out double on the first pitch that he saw, putting the tying run in scoring position. Freddie Freeman then fell behind 0-2 before lining a game-tying RBI double into right field. Teoscar Hernandez followed with a walk-off RBI single that ended it. Even with this setback, Sewald still holds a terrific 1.56 ERA and 0.63 WHIP over 17 1/3 innings on the season while converting 11 of his first 12 save opportunities. Rotoworld 47 minutes ago

      Ohtani went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run, a double and an additional run scored in Tuesday's 6-5 win over the Diamondbacks.

      Advice: Ohtani was a triple shy of the cycle in another impressive game from atop the order. Over his last 20 games, the superstar has slugged 12 homers and driven in 23 runs while batting .351 (26-for-74). He's been outstanding all year and seems to be getting better with his recent performance.     • Cease allows six earned, two homers vs. Rangers
      Dylan Cease allowed eight hits and six earned runs over 3 2/3 innings in Tuesday’s loss to the Rangers.

      Advice: Cease had an up-and-down first inning. While he recorded all three of his outs via the strikeout, he allowed two hits, with the second coming on a two-run homer by Nathaniel Lowe to give the Rangers an early lead. It would only get worse from there, as Cease would give up another two-run bomb to Lowe in the third inning and was pulled in the fourth inning shortly after allowing a sixth run off a Marcus Semien single. It’s been a rough stretch for Cease, who has allowed 17 earned runs over his last 19 innings while striking out 29 batters and walking nine.       Sean Manaea allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits in seven innings in a no-decision against the Nationals.

      Advice: Manaea struck out five and walked two on the day to lower his ERA to 3.67. While the surface-level stats are good, Manaea got just nine whiffs on 47 swings for a 19 percent whiff rate and 27 percent CSW. He filled up the strike zone with his sinker but struggled to throw his other pitches in the zone with each of them getting under a 50 percent zone rate. You can’t argue the results, but there doesn’t seem to be much in the arsenal that suggests Manaea is a much different pitcher this season; however, he could be a solid streamer against the Pirates this weekend.     • Daulton Varsho goes hitless versus Astros
      Daulton Varsho went hitless in a seventh consecutive start Monday, finishing 0-for-3 with a walk against the Astros.

      Advice: Varsho did get a hit off the bench Saturday, but he’s 1-for-28 with 13 strikeouts since June 19, dropping his average to .197. There’s too much homer and steal potential here to make Varsho droppable in fantasy leagues, but it’s tempting.     • Wraps up huge June with three hits
      Merrill went 3-for-4 with a double and a run in Sunday's loss to Boston.

      Advice: Merrill was the only Padre to notch multiple hits in the contest, and he scored the team's only run after belting a one-out double in the seventh inning. The rookie finished June with back-to-back three-hit games, with half of his knocks during the pair of contests going for extra bases. Merrill swung a hot bat for most of the month, and he finished June with a .320/.346/.650 slash line along with nine home runs, 20 RBI, 17 runs and two stolen bases. Rotowire.com Monday, 8:39 am
