    • Continues throwing on flat ground
Cole (elbow) threw on flat ground again Saturday, and Yankees manager Aaron Boone said the session went "really well," Max Goodman of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.

Advice: Cole has been playing catch on flat ground for about three weeks, extending his throwing distance up to 120 feet. Boone indicated early last week that the ace hurler is getting close to throwing off a mound, and that could happen as soon as this week. If Cole continues to progress without setbacks, he could feasibly be ready to join the Yankees' rotation when he's eligible to come off the 60-day IL in late May. • Spins gem against STL
Quintana didn't factor into the decision, allowing one run on three hits and a walk across eight innings Sunday against St. Louis. He struck out three.

Advice: Quintana completed six innings for the first time all season, going eight frames for the first time since September of 2022. However, he didn't get the win, as the contest went into the extras tied 1-1. The veteran southpaw has yielded fewer than three earned runs in four of his six starts and has yet to exceed four strikeouts in 2024. He's tentatively lined up for a start Friday against Tampa Bay. • Pitches into ninth versus Tampa Bay
Fedde (2-0) earned the win after he pitched 8.1 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out nine batters in Sunday's 4-2 victory over the Rays.

Advice: Fedde tossed three scoreless innings before he surrendered a solo homer to Isaac Paredes in the top of the fourth frame. He later allowed another run in the top of the ninth when attempting to finish off the complete game, exiting with a runner on second and one out in the final inning. The 31-year-old has now recorded back-to-back quality starts while he's given up just three total runs over 22 innings in his last three outings. Fedde will carry a 2.60 ERA into his next projected start Friday in St. Louis. Rotowire.com Sunday, 3:23 pm

    • José Quintana gets through eight against Cardinals
José Quintana surrendered only run and three hits over eight innings Sunday against the Cardinals.

Advice: Quintana hadn’t lasted longer than 5 2/3 innings in any of his five starts this season before getting through eight against the feeble Cardinals today. This lowers his ERA to 3.48, but we wouldn’t trust him as a mixed-league guy right now. Rotoworld Sunday, 2:36 pm

    • Erick Fedde pitches into ninth in defeating Rays
Erick Fedde limited the Rays to two runs in 8 1/3 innings and struck out nine as the White Sox completed a three-game sweep with a 4-2 win on Sunday.

Advice: That’s 20 strikeouts in two games and 39 in six starts this season for Fedde. He struck out 14 batters in his final six starts for the Nationals in 2022 before getting non-tendered and going to pitch in Korea for a year. Overall, he’s 2-0 with a 2.60 ERA. It doesn’t seem like he should remain quite this good and the fact that he’s on such a bad team is going to take a toll on his fantasy value, but he’s definitely a much-improved pitcher from his Nationals days. • Looks mortal versus Phillies
Cease (3-2) took the loss against Philadelphia on Saturday, allowing five runs on six hits and three walks while striking out five batters over six innings.

Advice: Prior to Saturday, Cease hadn't given up more than two earned runs in any of his five starts and had pitched to a 1.82 ERA. That number ballooned to 2.78 after the outing against Philadelphia, with Alec Bohm accounting for four RBI against the right-hander. Despite the hiccup, Cease has been the Padres' most effective starter this season, and he'll look to bounce back into form in his next appearance, which projects to come on the road in Arizona. • Surrenders six runs Saturday
Civale allowed six runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out three batters over 4.1 innings in a no-decision against the White Sox on Saturday.

Advice: Civale made it through three scoreless frames before serving up an Andrew Benintendi three-run homer in the fourth. The right-hander returned for the fifth frame but gave up three straight hits for another run before departing with one out, and both runners he left on base later came around to score. Civale began the campaign with three quality starts among his first four appearances, but he's fallen off since then, yielding 11 runs across nine innings over his subsequent two starts. He'll try to get back on track in his next start, which is tentatively lined up to be a home outing against the Mets next week. Rotowire.com Saturday, 10:23 pm

    • Dylan Cease walks three, allows five in loss
Dylan Cease gave up five runs in six innings of work while picking up a loss Saturday against the Phillies.

Advice: Cease was going to have to be at his best to match Ranger Suárez, and unfortunately he wasn’t close. The right-hander did whiff five, but he gave up six hits that included a two-run homer from Alec Bohm. In his first season with the Padres, Cease has posted a very solid 2.78 ERA despite this not-so-effective outing. A chance to lower that figure comes Friday in Arizona. • Aaron Civale struggles over 4 1/3 against CWS
Aaron Civale was charged for six runs on eight hits over 4 1/3 innings in a no-decision against the White Sox on Saturday.

Advice: Civale was fortunate to not pick up a loss, as the no-decision has nothing to do with effective pitching. The right-hander was solid over the first three frames, but failed the second time through the lineup with three runs allowed in both the fourth and fifth frames. Civale has struggled in back-to-back outings, and his ERA for the month of April is a disappointing 5.06 despite pitching well to begin the month. He gets the Mets on Friday.
