  • Max Scherzer (thumb) to make rehab start Sunday
    Max Scherzer will make a rehab start for Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday.

    Advice: It will be interesting to see how quickly the Rangers let Scherzer return from the minors. The 39-year-old has made a total of six minor league rehab starts during his 16-year career and never more than two during one IL stay. One would think a typical pitcher would get three or four in his situation (he missed the entire spring after back surgery and then made rehab start in April before injuring his thumb).   • Resuming rehab assignment Sunday
    Scherzer (back/arm) will resume a rehab assignment with Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.

    Advice: Scherzer had to be pulled off his initial rehab assignment in early May following a nerve problem with his throwing arm, but he's been trending in the right direction in recent weeks after receiving a cortisone injection. The 39-year-old was initially placed on the injured list due to his recovery from offseason back surgery. Scherzer threw 40 pitches in a live batting practice session earlier this week, so he should be ready for at least that many pitches Sunday.   • Another rehab start coming
    Cole (elbow) will make a rehab start with Double-A Somerset on Sunday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

    Advice: Cole made his first rehab appearance Tuesday with Somerset, firing 3.1 scoreless innings with five strikeouts. He threw 45 pitches and touched 97 miles per hour, which is in line with his normal velocity.     Raleigh went 0-for-2 with a walk, a stolen base and a run in a win over the Athletics on Thursday.

  • Corbin Carroll records three hits in Arizona’s win
    Corbin Carroll went 3-for-5 with a double, a steal and two runs scored as the Diamondbacks edged the Padres 4-3 on Thursday.

    Advice: It’s just Carroll’s second three-hit game of the year. All three of Carroll’s hits were legit, leaving his bat on a line at 108, 106 and 99 mph. It’s definitely his most encouraging game in weeks and maybe of the entire season. At .201, he finished the game over the Mendoza Line for the first time since May 12.     Carroll went 3-for-5 with a double, a stolen base and two runs scored in Thursday's 4-3 win over the Padres.

    Advice: Carroll's three-hit effort got his batting average over .200 for the first time since May 12. He's opened June 5-for-21 (.238) over six contests, and his steal Thursday was his first since May 25. The outfielder is slashing .201/.284/.291 with two home runs, 10 thefts, 20 RBI, 30 runs scored, seven doubles and four triples over 61 games in a disappointing sophomore campaign.     Pages went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in a loss to Pittsburgh on Wednesday.

    Advice: Pages hit one of Los Angeles' two homers off rookie phenom Paul Skenes, launching a solo shot in the fifth inning. It was the first homer for Pages over his past 13 games and his sixth overall this season. Despite the lack of power recently, the rookie outfielder has been swinging a hot bat, collecting four multi-hit efforts over his past seven contests and slashing .500/.522/.682 during that span.   • Remains leadoff against righties
    Carroll batted leadoff and went 1-for-5 with a run scored in Wednesday's 9-3 loss to the Giants.

    Advice: Carroll was moved down to the eighth in the order the last two games, but that is an adjustment against left-handers only. Last year's NL Rookie of the Year continues to struggle overall, slashing .192/.278/.279 through 259 plate appearances. There are indicators to explain his issues -- fewer barrels and an increase in pop-up rate jump out -- but he's retained good plate discipline and luck appears to be a factor.
