• Diaz blows back-to-back saves
Edwin Diaz blew another save against the Phillies on Thursday.

Advice: Three days after blowing his second save of the season, Diaz blew another save opportunity against the Phillies. Pitching with a one-run lead, Diaz walked Brandon Marsh to start the ninth inning. Marsh advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Bryson Stott. All three of Diaz’ blown saves have come in the month of May. Once an elite closer, Diaz is showing the rust of someone who missed an entire season with a knee injury.

  • Another blown save
Diaz blew the save Thursday against Philadelphia, allowing one run on one hit and one walk with two strikeouts over one inning.

Advice: Diaz inherited a one-run lead for the bottom of the ninth but didn't convert his sixth save of 2024. Instead, Diaz walked Brandon Marsh and then allowed Marsh to reach second on a wild pitch before Bryson Stott hit an RBI single to send the game into extras. Diaz has blown three of his last four save chances and has allowed six runs over his last eight innings. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 7:28 pm
  • Exceptional in rehab start
Whitlock (oblique) struck out five and allowed two hits and one walk over 4.2 scoreless innings Wednesday in his rehab start with Triple-A Worcester.

Advice: Whitlock pumped in 40 of his 61 pitches for strikes and induced 12 swings and misses, looking as strong as ever while pitching in a game for the first time since April 16. Even though he didn't get fully stretched out for a traditional starter's workload Wednesday, Whitlock could return from the 15-day injured list to make his next appearance out of the Red Sox rotation. If the Red Sox decide he won't require an additional rehab appearance, Whitlock would likely start with the big club either Monday or Tuesday at Tampa Bay. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 10:44 am

  • Garrett Whitlock sharp in rehab start
Garrett Whitlock (oblique) pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out five, in his rehab start for Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday.

Advice: Whitlock is slated to come off the injured list and rejoin the Red Sox rotation next week. The Red Sox could go to six starters for a spell then or send Cooper Criswell, who has been terrific, either to the bullpen or Triple-A. Rotoworld Wednesday, 9:53 am

  • Dealing with flexor strain
An MRI confirmed Alzolay is dealing with a right flexor strain, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Advice: Alzolay was placed on the 15-day injured list Monday and imaging has confirmed the initial diagnosis. He will be shut down for five days before being reevaluated. Most likely, the injury is going to require longer than a minimum stay on the IL. Hector Neris will continue to serve as the Cubs' primary ninth-inning option. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 1:11 pm

  • Struggles in blown save
Diaz blew the save Monday against Philadelphia, allowing two runs on two hits, two walks and a hit batter. He had one strikeout over one inning.

Advice: Diaz looked extremely unsettled Monday night, issuing his first free passes since April 20, ending a streak of eight walk-free innings. Even more indicative of his unsteady control, the Mets closer allowed the tying run to score by beaning Alec Bohm with the bases loaded. Despite the ugly outing Monday, Diaz is cemented as the Mets closer with his ERA standing at 3.24 over 16.2 innings. Rotowire.com Monday, 8:11 pm
  • Edwin Díaz melts down Monday in ugly blown save
Edwin Díaz was charged with two runs in the ninth inning on Monday against the Phillies in a blown save.

Advice: Not great. Díaz was called upon to guard a two-run lead in the final frame and was unable to slam the door. He served up a solo shot to Bryson Stott to kick things off before drilling Alec Bohm with the bases loaded to push across the game-tying run with two outs in the frame. It was his second blown save in seven chances this season. There’s zero chance of Díaz losing his grip on the closing role in New York, but it’s worth noting that this outing was a real mess. • Back from bereavement list
The Brewers activated Payamps (personal) from the bereavement list Monday, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Advice: Payamps missed the last three games but will rejoin the rotation for the start of Milwaukee's series against the Pirates. He seems to have fallen behind Trevor Megill in the Brewers' bullpen hierarchy but could still find himself in the mix for saves. Rotowire.com Monday, 3:08 pm

  • Brewers reinstate Payamps from bereavement list
Brewers reinstated RHP Joel Payamps from the bereavement list.

Advice: Payamps will be available tonight after a weekend away. He’ll probably pitch in front of Trevor Megill for the most part. Rotoworld Monday, 2:22 pm
