• Throwing off mound Saturday
Gray (elbow) will throw a bullpen session Saturday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.

Advice: It will be the first time Gray has thrown off a mound since he was diagnosed with a flexor strain nearly a month ago. The right-hander will eventually progress to facing hitters and going out on a rehab assignment, but it could be a couple weeks still before he's ready to return. Rotowire.com 36 minutes ago

  • Throwing in spring game
Springs is scheduled to throw in an extended spring game May 20, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Advice: Springs will take another step forward in his recovery from Tommy John surgery, making his first -- albeit unofficial -- game action since April of 2023. Still, Springs seems to be on track for a return in July or August, a goal the Rays set for Springs back in February. Rotowire.com 40 minutes ago

  • Could piggyback another starter
The Phillies are considering piggybacking Turnbull with another starter, Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports.

Advice: Turnbull's stint in the Phillies' rotation was supposed to be temporary while Taijuan Walker (shoulder) worked his way back. However, Turnbull has pitched so well -- posting a 1.67 ERA and 36:10 K:BB in 32.1 innings -- that the club is considering ways to keep him in its rotation even with Walker back in the fold. A six-man rotation hasn't been ruled out, although manager Rob Thomson has indicated it's unlikely. More likely, it seems, is that Turnbull and another starter -- either Walker or Cristopher Sanchez -- are used in tandem, with the decision on who would start and who would be in long relief that day depending on the opposition. Turnbull could still eventually shift to the bullpen -- he hasn't thrown more than 56.2 innings in a season since 2019 -- but it doesn't sound like that's going to happen yet. Thomson has indicated that he could make an announcement regarding his rotation plans as soon as Friday. Rotowire.com Today, 1:00 pm
  • Lands on IL with lower-back strain
The Cardinals placed Matz on the 15-day injured list Friday, retroactive to May 1, with a lower-back strain.

Advice: Matz attempted to pitch through back soreness in his last start Tuesday in Detroit, but it didn't go well and an MRI has revealed a strain. It's not clear at this point how long he might be on the shelf. The Cards haven't revealed who will take Matz's spot in the rotation, but his next turn would be Tuesday and Sem Robberse would be on regular rest that day. Rotowire.com Today, 10:13 am

  • Cardinals place Steven Matz (back) on 15-day IL
Cardinals placed LHP Steven Matz on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to May 1, with a lower back strain.

Advice: The 32-year-old will be sidelined for at least the next two weeks as he heals from a lower back injury. Matz pitched earlier this week and tried to push through the pain, but it appears it’s too much for him to continue without proper treatment and recovery. Rotoworld Today, 10:10 am

  • Slated for another rehab start
Craig Counsell said Friday that Hendricks (back) will start for Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday as he continues his rehab assignment, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Advice: Hendricks allowed two runs while striking out seven over five innings with Double-A Tennessee on Thursday, with Counsell referring to the outing as "encouraging." However, given how badly Hendricks struggled with the big club before his back injury, the Cubs will give him another tune-up start at a higher level before considering a return to the major-league rotation. • Summoned to big leagues
The Brewers recalled Martin from Triple-A Nashville on Friday.

Advice: Martin was claimed off waivers from the Diamondbacks last month. The 28-year-old missed the 2023 season following lat surgery and had spent all of 2024 at the Triple-A level, holding a 6.14 ERA and 8:7 K:BB over 7.1 frames. Martin had mostly been a starter in the past but has made a full-time move to relief this season. Rotowire.com Today, 9:19 am

  • Brewers recall Corbin Martin
Brewers recalled RHP Corbin Martin from Triple-A Nashville.

Advice: Martin was claimed off waivers from the Diamondbacks in mid-April. The 28-year-old hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2022 and has a career 6.71 ERA, 1.89 WHIP with a 53/38 K/BB ratio across 57 2/3 innings of work. Rotoworld Today, 9:04 am

  • Cleared to resume throwing
Smyly (hip) has been cleared to begin playing catch, Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Advice: Smyly hasn't pitched in nearly two weeks because of a right hip impingement but is ready to begin ramping things back up. The left-hander seems likely to require a rehab assignment before rejoining the Cubs' bullpen. Rotowire.com Today, 8:34 am
