    • Kenta Maeda fans six, gets first victory
      Kenta Maeda limited the Cardinals to one run in six innings and struck out five in the Tigers’ 4-1 victory Wednesday.

      Advice: It’s his first win in six tries this season. Pitching with a couple of extra days of rest, Maeda had a little more velocity today, topping out at 91.6 mph, and he wound up with a nice 34% CSW in the 79-pitch outing.       Maeda (1-1) earned the win Wednesday against St. Louis, allowing one run on four hits over six innings. He struck out five.

      Advice: A Willson Contreras solo home run in the fourth inning was the lone mark against Maeda on Tuesday as the veteran right-hander cruised to his first win with the Tigers. After a brutal start to the year, Maeda's now allowed just one run on seven hits and no walks in his last two outings (11 innings). He's lowered his ERA to 5.02 with a 1.22 WHIP and 22:7 K:BB across six starts this season.     • Stumbles in Boston
      Webb (3-2) took the loss Tuesday, giving up four runs on nine hits and three walks over 3.2 innings as the Giants fell 4-0 to the Red Sox. He struck out four.

      Advice: After four straight starts in which he lasted at least seven innings and allowed two runs or less, Webb struggled to put away hitters and generated only four swinging strikes among his 91 pitches. Despite the stumble, the 27-year-old right-hander still sports a 2.98 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 30:10 K:BB through 42.1 innings, and he's served up just one homer so far in 2024.       Cortes (1-3) took the loss Tuesday against the Orioles, allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out five.

      Advice: Three of Baltimore's four runs off Cortes came in the fourth inning, as the 29-year-old left-hander took a second straight loss. Cortes had gone seven innings in each of his previous two outings, allowing just three runs while striking out 13 in that span. His ERA now sits at 3.86 with a 1.10 WHIP and 37:7 K:BB across seven starts (42 innings). Cortes is currently scheduled to face the Tigers at home in his next start.       Logan Webb allowed four runs on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings in a loss to the Red Sox on Tuesday.

      Advice: Webb allowed just two extra-base hits, but the Red Sox tagged him early and often on Tuesday as Webb allowed an average exit velocity on balls in play of 99.5 mph. However, it just seems like a bad outing. He struggled to find the command of his changeup, which led to just a 13 percent whiff rate and the Red Sox hitters were able to tee off when he did land his pitches in the strike zone.     • Nestor Cortes hit around in no decision
      Nestor Cortes allowed four runs on eight hits in six innings in a loss to the Orioles on Tuesday.

      Advice: It wasn’t a bad day overall for Cortes, who has a 20 percent whiff rate but just a 24 percent CSW. The Orioles weren’t fooled by much and had 11 hard-hit baseballs against Cortes on the night. The left-hander relies a lot on deception, so when hitters have their timing against him, it’s going to be hard for him to find success.       Nick Pivetta (elbow) is scheduled to make a minor league rehab start on Thursday.

      Advice: Pivetta is targeting an early-May return to Boston’s starting rotation after landing on the injured list back on April 9 with a flexor strain in his right elbow.       Advice: Working his way back from a mild left flexor strain, Luzardo played catch Monday and will do so for a second straight day Tuesday.
