      Advice: Cortes matched a season high with nine strikeouts, as he allowed only four baserunners in the contest. Cortes shut out the Tigers through six but was pulled with one out in the seventh after allowing two base hits in the inning. Both runners eventually came around to score, tying the game and ending Cortes' bid to earn his second win. It was the fourth quality start in eight games for Cortes, who lowered his ERA to 3.72 with a 1.03 WHIP and 46 strikeouts through 48.1 innings.       Luis Severino was charged with four runs in five innings Sunday in a no-decision against the Rays.

      Advice: Severino’s velocity was down a little today and he walked a career-high six batters, which is a little scary. He had never even walked five in a start previously. He’s not one of the Mets pitchers that typically has issues with the stolen base — he had allowed just one in his first six starts this season — but the Rays swiped three bases while he was in the game and seven in eight tries overall today. It’s the most runs he’s allowed since he was roughed up in his Mets debut on March 30. He’ll get the Braves next, so sitting him in mixed leagues seems like a good idea.       Nestor Cortes looked sharp in a no-decision against the Tigers on Sunday, giving up two runs on just three hits over 6 1/3 innings of work.

      Advice: The crafty 29-year-old southpaw piled up nine strikeouts on a rainy afternoon in the Bronx while allowing just one base on balls. He kept the Tigers off the board completely through the first six innings, but he allowed a pair of singles before departing in the seventh — and both runners came around to score against the Yankees’ bullpen. Cortes got 13 whiffs on 97 pitches on the day, registering a strong CSW of 33 percent. He’ll attempt to get back in the win column as he carries a 3.72 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and a 46/8 K/BB ratio (48 1/3 innings) into Saturday’s matchup against the Rays in Tampa Bay.       Schmidt (3-1) picked up the win Saturday over the Tigers, giving up three runs on four hits over five innings. He struck out seven without walking a batter.

      Advice: The right-hander tied his season high in strikeouts while generating 33 called or swinging strikes among his 91 pitches. Schmidt has been remarkably consistent to begin the season, allowing between one and three runs in every start and completing five innings in six of seven outings, although he has yet to last a full six frames.       Max Scherzer (back, thumb) is currently in a holding pattern when it comes to his rehab process.

      Advice: The 39-year-old right-hander was scratched from a rehab outing earlier in the week due to inflammation in his thumb ligament. While that issue hasn’t gotten any worse, it also hasn’t improved over the last couple of days, causing the Rangers to kind of put everything on hold. They’ll continue to take things day-to-day until he feels improvement and is ready to resume playing catch again.     • Clarke Schmidt fans seven over five vs. Tigers
      Clarke Schmidt allowed three runs while striking out seven over five innings to get a win Saturday over the Tigers.

      Advice: Schmidt allowed a leadoff homer to Riley Greene, and then the right-hander allowed a pair of runs in the fourth. In between — and an inning after — the right-hander was solid while giving up four hits and not issuing a walk. The overall result is just so-so, but Schmidt looked better than the line suggests. He’s back on the bump. He faces the Rays on Friday, and Schmidt will take a 3.50 ERA into that matchup. Rotoworld Saturday, 12:47 pm
       
    • Collects third win
      Schreiber (3-0) earned the win Friday versus the Rangers, allowing two hits and two walks with one strikeout in a scoreless inning.

      Advice: Schreiber erased a walk with a double play, then loaded the bases again before striking out Marcus Semien to end the top of the seventh inning. The Royals rallied for six runs in their half of the frame, and Schreiber ended up with the win. He's pitched 5.1 consecutive scoreless innings, and he's been scored on just once this season, pitching to 0.59 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 11:5 K:BB over 15.1 innings. He's getting some good luck, as indicated by a .227 BABIP and 3.06 FIP, but the right-hander looks poised to play an important high-leverage role for the Royals throughout the year.
