    • Cole Irvin gets hold in first relief appearance
Cole Irvin worked two scoreless innings for a hold Sunday in his first relief appearance of the season.

Advice: The Orioles are probably going to use a six-man rotation for most of the next month, so Irvin could be back in the mix next time through. It’s pretty fortunate for the Orioles that they can view him as their sixth starter in spite of his 4-1 record and 2.90 ERA in seven starts. Rotoworld Sunday, 1:54 pm

    • Rebounds vs. Nats
Wheeler (5-3) earned the win Friday against the Nationals, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks over 7.1 innings. He struck out six.

Advice: It was an encouraging return to form for Wheeler after he was tagged for six runs over four innings by Miami in his last start. Before that outing, Wheeler had allowed just one earned run over four starts (25.1 innings). He's won five of his last six starts while lowering his ERA to 2.52 with a 0.97 WHIP and 71:19 K:BB over 60.2 innings this season. Wheeler is currently in line for a home matchup with the Rangers in his next outing. Rotowire.com Friday, 6:20 pm

    • Zack Wheeler fans six in victory over Nationals
Zack Wheeler picked up his fifth victory of the season on Friday night, holding the Nationals to just two runs on three hits over 7 1/3 strong innings of work.

Advice: The 33-year-old right-hander racked up six strikeouts on the night while issuing three free passes. The Nationals’ scoring in the contest came on a pair of RBI doubles — one by Keibert Ruiz in the second inning and another off the bat of Eddie Rosario in the fifth. Aside from that though, Wheeler was in complete control. He got 17 swings and misses on 104 pitches on the night — 10 on his fastball alone — while posting a CSW of 28 percent. Now 5-3 on the season, Wheeler will carry a 2.52 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and a 71/19 K/BB ratio (60 2/3 innings) into Thursday’s showdown against the Rangers. Rotoworld Friday, 6:00 pm

    • Extends scoreless innings streak
Weaver struck out three batters, walked one and gave up two hits over two scoreless innings in relief in Wednesday's 4-0 win over the Twins.

Advice: Weaver covered the seventh and eighth frames Wednesday, allowing a single in each inning but keeping the Twins off the scoreboard. The veteran right-hander has gone 17.1 frames without giving up an earned run, lowering his season ERA to 2.25 in the process. Weaver has posted an outstanding 30:5 K:BB across 28 innings on the season and has tallied the first five holds of his career after spending most of his previous eight campaigns as a starter. • Dominant in Tuesday's win
Sale (6-1) picked up the win in Tuesday's 7-0 victory over the Cubs, scattering two hits over seven scoreless innings. He struck out nine without walking a batter.

Advice: The veteran southpaw simply overmatched Chicago's hitters, and the only runner to get into scoring position against Sale came after one of his two HBPs on the night. He generated 30 called or swinging strikes among his 92 pitches as he produced his second straight quality start and fourth of the season. Sale will take a 2.54 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and eye-popping 61:8 K:BB through 49.2 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come at home early next week against the Padres. • Hammered by Atlanta
Taillon (3-1) took the loss Tuesday, surrendering seven runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks over four innings as the Cubs fell 7-0 to Atlanta. He struck out two.

Advice: The right-hander's own fielding error in the fourth inning softened the blow to his ERA, but Taillon's final line was by no means undeserved as he served up homers to Michael Harris and Matt Olson in his last frame. It's the first time in five starts Taillon has been taken deep multiple times, and he'll take a 1.61 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 18:8 K:BB through 28 innings into his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home this weekend against the Pirates. • Strong until late homer
Gilbert (3-2) allowed three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out seven over 6.2 innings to take the loss Tuesday versus the Royals.

Advice: Gilbert allowed just four baserunners over the first six innings. He went back out for the seventh, but two walks and a Nelson Velazquez home run ended his outing in unfortunate fashion. It's a significant improvement on the eight-run fiasco he had in Minnesota in his last start, but it's still a second straight loss for 27-year-old. He's pitched to a 3.07 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 61:18 K:BB over 58.2 innings across nine starts this season. Gilbert is projected for a tough road start versus the Yankees his next time out. • Logan Gilbert takes loss in quality start
Logan Gilbert lost to the Royals after allowing three runs in 6 2/3 innings Tuesday.

Advice: All of the runs scored on Nelson Velázquez’s homer with two outs in the seventh, after which Gilbert was immediately removed. Obviously, it was an unfortunate conclusion, but it was still a nice rebound outing after he gave up eight runs last time out versus the Twins. Gilbert struck out seven and got 18 missed swings, tied for the second-highest total from any starter tonight (Joe Ross, at 21, was tops). Rotoworld Tuesday, 9:25 pm

    • Chris Sale stays hot in domination of Cubs
Chris Sale threw seven shutout innings in a 7-0 win over the Cubs, allowing just two hits and striking out nine.

Advice: He’s now allowed just two runs over his last 25 innings. Sale’s slider carved up the Cubs all game, with a 44 percent whiff rate and 34 percent CSW on the pitch. The average exit velocity on all contact against Sale was just 81 mph as the left-hander mowed down the Cubs’ order. The effort gave him a 2.54 ERA on the year to go along with 61 strikeouts to just eight walks in 49 2/3 innings. He has been every bit the ace he was back before his injuries and there’s no reason to doubt he can keep it up as long as he can stay healthy. Rotoworld Tuesday, 6:53 pm
