    • Garrett Whitlock to make rehab start Wednesday
Garrett Whitlock (oblique) will make a minor league rehab start on Wednesday for Triple-A Worcester.

Advice: Whitlock landed on the injured list back in mid-April with a left oblique issue and should be ready to return to Boston’s starting rotation mix prior to the end of May. Rotoworld Today, 10:25 am

    • Starting rehab assignment Wednesday
Whitlock (oblique) will make a rehab start with Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.

Advice: Whitlock was placed on the 15-day IL on April 17 after sustaining a left oblique strain April 16 against the Guardians. Before landing on the IL, Whitlock was 1-0 over four starts with a 1.96 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 17:7 K:BB over 18.1 innings. How he fares during and after his rehab start Wednesday will determine whether the 27-year-old right-hander will require more than one outing. Rotowire.com Today, 10:18 am

    • Jameson Taillon questionable for Sunday start
Jameson Taillon is dealing with renewed back discomfort and might not start Sunday’s series final against the Pirates.

Advice: Taillon will test his back on Saturday to determine whether he’ll take the ball for Sunday’s series finale against the Pirates. The 32-year-old, who missed the first couple weeks of the season due to a back strain, felt something in his back while warming up earlier this week for a bullpen session, which led to his start being pushed back from Friday to later this weekend. There should be some clarity on his status at some point prior to Sunday’s showdown. Rotoworld Today, 6:57 am
    • Dealing with back stiffness
Cubs manager Craig Counsell said that Taillon was scratched from Friday's start against the Pirates due to back stiffness, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Advice: Taillon felt his back tighten up Tuesday when playing catch, and it didn't improve in time for him to make his scheduled start in the series opener. Counsell noted that the right-hander's back issue is not as bad as the one he dealt with in spring training, which caused Taillon to start the season on the 15-day IL. He will be re-evaluated Saturday, and there's a chance he could take the mound Sunday. Javier Assad will start Friday while Justin Steele will get the nod Saturday. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 2:17 pm
    • No longer starting Friday
Taillon won't start Friday in Pittsburgh, as the Cubs list Javier Assad as their starter for the series opener versus the Pirates, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Advice: The late change perhaps hints that Taillon may be tending to an injury. The decision to have Assad take the hill for the series opener instead wouldn't seem to be the result of any dissatisfaction with Taillon's performance, as the 32-year-old has opened his second season with the Cubs with a 3-0 record, 1.13 ERA and 0.88 WHIP over 24 innings. Justin Steele will take the hill on four days' rest to start Saturday, while the Cubs are listing their starter for Sunday's series finale as "TBA." More clarity on Chicago's plans for Sunday -- as well as when Taillon might next pitch -- could come prior to Friday's contest. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 6:37 am
    • Tagged for eight runs
Gilbert (3-1) took the loss Thursday against the Twins, allowing eight runs on nine hits and two walks over four innings. He struck out four.

Advice: Five of Minnesota's runs came in the first inning, including three on a Manuel Margot double. Gilbert hadn't allowed more than two earned runs in his previous five starts, recording quality starts in six of his previous seven outings. His ERA went from 1.69 to 2.94 after Thursday with a 0.94 WHIP and 54:15 K:BB across 52 innings. Gilbert will look to get back on track in his next turn in the rotation, currently scheduled for next week against Kansas City. Rotowire.com Thursday, 3:42 pm

    • Logan Gilbert allows eight over four against Twins
Logan Gilbert was shelled for eight runs in four innings while picking up a loss to the Twins on Thursday.

Advice: Gilbert allowed nine hits with two walks while adding for strikeouts. To say the right-hander was a disappointment was an understatement, as he entered this outing with a sensational 1.69 ERA over 48 innings. That ERA immediately took a hit with five runs allowed in the first, and three more crossed the plate before ending his 91-pitch day. The Twins are on fire and Gilbert was due for a poor outing, but this is still not one fantasy managers could have seen coming. He’ll be back on the bump against the Royals on Tuesday. • Dominates old team
Sale (5-1) earned the win over the Red Sox on Wednesday, hurling six shutout innings while allowing six hits and one walk. He struck out 10.

Advice: Sale allowed at least one hit in each of his first five innings of work but was consistently able to work his way through it without sustaining any damage. He logged just one 1-2-3 inning, which came in the sixth, while fanning a season-high 10 batters on the night. The veteran lefty has now logged quality starts in three of his last four outings and hasn't produced fewer than six strikeouts in any of his seven starts this season. He's also won each of his last four starts. Rotowire.com Thursday, 3:34 am

    • Sale dominates former team Wednesday
Chris Sale was utterly dominant with six shutout innings and 10 strikeouts and picked up the win in the 5-0 victory over the Red Sox on Wednesday.

Advice: Sale lowered his ERA on the season to 2.95 with the excellent outing. He certainly showed the Red Sox what they’re missing after trading him last offseason. The win was Sale’s fifth in seven starts this season. His 52 strikeouts are in the top 10 among qualified starting pitchers. Sale is set to take on the Chicago Cubs at home next week.
