    • Belts eighth homer
Merrill went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a second run scored in Wednesday's 5-2 win over the Phillies.

Advice: The rookie center fielder accounted for the Padres' only run off Ranger Suarez, driving a two-seam fastball from the southpaw over the right-field wall in the second inning. Merrill has eight homers on the year, but five of them have come in the last seven games, boosting his slash line on the season to .279/.317/.417 with nine steals, 30 RBI and 32 runs in 74 contests. • Sharp in fifth win
Waldron (5-6) picked up the win in Wednesday's 5-2 victory over the Phillies, allowing one run on five hits and two walks over seven innings. He struck out six.

Advice: Aside from a Bryce Harper solo shot in the third inning, Waldron shut down the Phillies' offense over a season-high 104 pitches (64 strikes). The knuckleballer reeled off his fifth straight quality start, a stretch in which he's produced a dazzling 1.35 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 24:6 K:BB through 33.1 innings. Waldron will look to keep rolling in his next outing, which lines up to come at home early next week against the Nationals. Rotowire.com Today, 1:49 pm

    • Jackson Merrill homers, Padres edge Phillies
Jackson Merrill went 2-for-3 with a solo homer on Wednesday, leading the Padres to a 5-2 victory over the Phillies.

Advice: Merrill kicked off the scoring in this one with a 401-foot second-inning blast to right field -- his eighth big fly of the season -- off Phillies starter Ranger Suárez. The 21-year-old rookie sensation has caught fire over the past few days, going deep a whopping five times over his last seven contests since June 12. He also was hit by a pitch in the seventh inning before coming around to score later in the frame on a run-scoring single from Luis Arraez. Rotoworld Today, 12:50 pm

    • Matt Waldron gobbles up seven frames vs. Phillies
Matt Waldron allowed one run over seven innings on Wednesday in a win over the Phillies.

Advice: Waldron was extremely impressive on a sizzling-hot, 87-degree afternoon at Citizens Bank Park, finishing with six strikeouts and only handing out a pair of free passes. His lone mistake came in the third inning when he left a sinker out over the plate to Phillies superstar Bryce Harper, who promptly deposited it into the left-field grandstand. The 27-year-old knuckleballer has allowed two earned runs or fewer in eight consecutive starts dating back to May 11. He’ll bring a rapidly-improving 3.46 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 76/25 K/BB ratio across 83 1/3 innings (15 starts) into a favorable home outing on Monday against the Nationals. • Falters against D-backs
Irvin (5-6) took the loss Tuesday as the Nationals fell 5-0 to the Diamondbacks, giving up four runs on eight hits and four walks over five innings. He struck out two.

Advice: A lack of offensive support gave the right-hander no margin for error, but Irvin did himself no favors by tossing first-pitch strikes to only 11 of the 22 batters he faced and issuing a season high in free passes. In fact, the 27-year-old hadn't walked more than two batters in any 2024 start prior to Tuesday. Irvin will take a 3.24 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 71:19 K:BB through 86 innings into his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road this weekend in Coors Field. Rotowire.com Today, 6:58 am
    • Makes impact in return
Smith served as the designated hitter and went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in Tuesday's 7-6 loss to the Mets.

Advice: Smith returned to the starting lineup Tuesday after battling a hamstring issue since late last week. He was given a soft re-entry as the DH and could return to his normal duties as the fill-in third baseman for the injured Josh Jung (wrist). The surprisingly productive Smith has been a boon to the Rangers' offense which has missed Jung's bat. Smith is batting .298/.386/.451 with five homers, 16 doubles, one triple, 28 RBI and 34 runs scored over 249 plate appearances. Rotowire.com Today, 5:09 am

    • On fire in June
Vaughn went 1-for-4 with two RBI on Tuesday against the Astros.

Advice: Vaughn grounded into a pair of fielder's choice outs to tally his two RBI. Though it wasn't a particularly notable performance, he now has five home runs, 14 RBI and 12 runs scored across 14 games in June while also hitting .356. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 10:53 pm
    • Josh Smith hits three-run homer against Mets
Josh Smith went 2-for-4 and hit a three-run homer Tuesday in the loss to the Mets.

Advice: We’re still not really buying into Smith’s terrific start to the season, but there’s little doubt that he’ll remain in the Rangers lineup after Josh Jung returns. He’s batting .298/.386/.451 through 247 at-bats, even though his exit velocity numbers are actually worse than when he hit .185/.304/.328 last season. His strikeout rate is well down, which definitely helps, but he still seems to be overachieving at the moment. Rotoworld Yesterday, 8:46 pm

    • Irvin gives up four runs in loss to Diamondbacks
Jake Irvin allowed four earned runs on eight hits over five innings while striking out two in Tuesday’s loss to the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Irvin allowed the first three batters he faced to reach base, but it was the two-run homer by Ketel Marte that put him in a hole early. Irvin would go on to pitch two scoreless innings before surrendering two more runs in the fifth, which would be his final inning. It was just the second time this year that Irvin has allowed four or more runs in an outing, as he’s been one of the core members of a Nationals rotation that has surprised in the first half of the season. Irvin will look to get back on track in his next start, which is scheduled for Sunday against the Rockies. Rotoworld Yesterday, 6:15 pm
