• Cal Quantrill pitches well again in win over SF
Cal Quantrill held the Giants to just one run Thursday over six innings while picking up a win for the Rockies.

Advice: Quantrill scattered five hits with three walks, and he struck out five. As seen from the numbers above there was some traffic, but Quantrill was able to make enough key pitches to limit the damage while picking up another victory. That makes back-to-back effective starts for the 29-year-old, as he has given up just one run over his last 13 2/3 innings to lower his ERA to 3.94. The Rockies are going nowhere, but Quantrill will be an intriguing trade target if he keeps this up. His next chance comes Tuesday against the Padres. Rotoworld 13 minutes ago

  • Keaton Winn can’t get out of fourth in loss
Keaton Winn gave up seven runs in 3 2/3 innings Thursday while picking up a loss to the Rockies.

Advice: Oof. Winn was fine over the first three innings. He was anything but in the fourth. The Rockies ended up picking up seven off the right-hander, and while he threw 39-of-51 pitches for strikes, he also only picked up one strikeout and didn’t fool the Colorado hitters — particularly in that fourth inning. That’s back-to-back clunkers for Winn, and his ERA has ballooned to 5.63 in the process. It’s really not a good idea to use him next week in a scheduled start against the Dodgers. • Undergoes shoulder surgery
Rom underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder last week, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

Advice: It sounds as though the operation wound up being less invasive than initially anticipated, with a return before the end of the season for Rom not totally ruled out. The left-hander had been plagued by shoulder issues since mid-March before finally opting for surgery. Rotowire.com 58 minutes ago

  • Drew Rom out indefinitely after shoulder surgery
Drew Rom underwent arthroscopic shoulder surgery last week.

Advice: Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol indicated that it’s not necessarily season-ending for Rom, but he’s going to wind up being sidelined until the late stages of the year. There’s a chance he’s back for a handful of appearances at some point in September. Rotoworld Today, 1:44 pm

  • Available in relief
Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Thursday that Liberatore will be available out of the bullpen for the team's series this weekend in Milwaukee, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

Advice: Liberatore remains a candidate to draw a start early next week, but he will sit with the relievers this weekend in case he's needed. The left-hander allowed one run over 3.2 innings in a spot start versus the White Sox in his last appearance and before that held a 2.76 ERA in 12 relief appearances. Rotowire.com Today, 1:38 pm
  • Returns to bullpen
Blach tossed three innings out of the bullpen in Tuesday's 5-0 loss to the Giants, giving up one earned run on four hits and one walk while striking out two.

Advice: Blach made a five-inning spot start for the Rockies in an April 24 loss to the Padres, but he's since moved into a long-relief role. After tossing four shutout innings behind starter Peter Lambert in a 5-4 loss to the Marlins on May 2, Blach was called upon to cover multiple frames once again Tuesday and pitched effectively. • Bryan Woo set to return on Friday against A’s
Bryan Woo (elbow) will start on Friday against the Athletics.

Advice: Woo will make his return to Seattle’s starting rotation after missing the opening six weeks of the regular season recovering from right elbow inflammation. The 24-year-old righty was sharp in his latest rehab start for Triple-A Tacoma with six strikeouts over five scoreless frames and shouldn’t have any workload restrictions in his season debut. It’s an extremely tasty matchup, which makes Woo a viable option for fantasy managers in all formats right out of the gate. Rotoworld Today, 1:33 pm

  • Slade Cecconi holds Reds to one run in victory
Slade Cecconi held the Reds to one run Thursday while working 5 1/3 innings, but didn’t factor into the decision.

Advice: Cecconi allowed three hits, and he walked two against two strikeouts. The right-hander’s only run allowed came on a Jeimer Candelario homer in the fifth inning, and outside of that he didn’t deal with much traffic. The 24-year-old lowers his ERA to 4.15 with the strong — if not always spectacular — outing, and he’ll have a rematch with the Reds next week, assuming Arizona doesn’t make changes to the rotation. • Hunter Greene strikes out six, walks five in loss
Hunter Greene surrendered three runs in five innings with six strikeouts in a no-decision Thursday versus the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Greene allowed four hits, but he also issued five walks with 40-of-84 pitches landing outside of the strike zone. The right-hander had his swing-and-miss stuff, and he was able to work around those free passes with a scoreless second-through-fifth inning. The free passes hurt the WHIP, but this start coulda been a lot worse. Greene gets a rematch with Arizona next week. Rotoworld Today, 1:28 pm
