  • Allows five earned runs in loss
    Castillo (6-8) suffered the loss Thursday, allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks over five innings against the Guardians. He struck out four.

    Advice: Castillo entered the fifth with a 3-2 lead, but with two outs a walk preceded a home run by Andres Gimenez, then another walk paved the way for a Josh Naylor double that saddled Castillo with five runs allowed and left him on the hook for the loss. Following Castillo's start June 2, he was on a 10-game stretch of allowing no more than two earned runs. However, his last three starts have been more of a mixed bag, as he's allowed 12 earned runs over his last 16 innings (6.75 ERA) including five runs allowed in two of his last three starts.   • Luis Castillo struggles in start vs. Guardians
    Luis Castillo gave up five runs in five innings against the Guardians on Thursday while picking up a loss.

    Advice: Castillo allowed eight hits and two walks while striking out four. He gave up two homers in the outing; a solo blast by Will Brennan, and a two-run shot to Andres Gimenez in the fifth. It’s a disappointing outing for the right-hander, and it’s the second time in three outings he’s given up five runs in as many frames.   • Pulled after four innings in loss
    Woo (3-1) took the loss to the Guardians on Wednesday, allowing three runs on four hits and one walk with one strikeout over four innings.

    Advice: Woo struggled early, allowing an RBI single by Josh Naylor in the first inning and a two-run home run by Steven Kwan in the second. He rebounded with two scoreless innings but was pulled after just 64 pitches with a 3-0 deficit. Considering he hasn't pitched since June 6 with a forearm injury, the Mariners were likely just being cautious with Woo's workload. Woo still owns a sparkling 1.67 ERA and 0.61 WHIP in 37.1 innings, but his current 5.97 K/9 is well below his 9.55 rate last season. He tentatively lines up to face the Rays early next week.   • Bryan Woo yanked after four innings
    Bryan Woo allowed three earned runs in four innings on Wednesday against the Guardians. He struck out one, walked one in a loss.

    Advice: This was Woo’s first start in 13 days after yet another health scare and he was not sharp. It took him 30 pitches to get through the first inning and he had trouble settling in. He retired the final seven batters he faced after Steven Kwan took him deep in the second inning, but without missing many bats. He forced just five whiffs and Guardians’ hitters fouled off 22 of the 64 pitches Woo threw in this forgettable start. Rotoworld Wednesday, 6:09 pm
     
  • Framber Valdez surrenders two runs in loss
    Framber Valdez pitched six innings of two-run ball Tuesday in a loss to the White Sox.

    Advice: Valdez allowed just two hits, but he walked five batters, which fueled the rallies in the third and fifth innings. Valdez worked out of big jams to limit the White Sox to single runs both innings, but the Astros offense did nothing to back him tonight. Rotoworld Tuesday, 8:04 pm
     
  • Struggles with control in loss
    Valdez (5-5) took the loss Tuesday against the White Sox, allowing two runs on two hits and five walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out five.

    Advice: The Houston southpaw toiled against a weak White Sox team that entered the evening collectively batting .220 with a 7.1 percent walk rate -- both qualifying as the second-worst marks in the majors. The five walks Valdez issued were the most since his first start this season against the Yankees on March 28, when he issued six free passes. The 30-year-old now sports a 3.91 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 56:24 K:BB over 73.2 innings. Valdez faces a difficult test in his next scheduled outing, slated to come against Baltimore at home this weekend.   • Solid effort ends in no-decision
    Gray allowed two runs on five hits and two walks over 7.2 innings in Monday's 7-6 win versus the Marlins. He struck out four and didn't factor in the decision.

    Advice: Gray pitched into the eighth inning for the first time this season and left the game up 4-1, but the bullpen couldn't hold the lead. The four strikeouts were a season low for Gray as he worked fast and efficiently, needing only 84 pitches to record 23 outs. The veteran's ERA now sits at 2.95 with a 1.02 WHIP through 13 starts.   • Sonny Gray goes 7 2/3 in no-decision vs. Marlins
    Sonny Gray allowed two runs over 7 2/3 innings on Monday in a no-decision against the Marlins.

    Advice: Gray was long gone before this one was decided in a 12-inning marathon, but he managed to complete seven frames for the second consecutive start. He struck out four and only issued two walks. The 34-year-old righty has been excellent this season in his St. Louis debut, allowing three earned runs or fewer in 10 of his 13 starts so far. He’ll bring a solid 2.95 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 95/22 K/BB ratio across 76 1/3 innings (13 starts) into a home outing on Sunday against the Giants. Rotoworld Monday, 7:27 pm

  • Ronel Blanco fires seven no-hit innings in victory
    Ronel Blanco delivered a dazzling performance in Sunday afternoon’s victory over the Tigers, firing seven innings of no-hit baseball.

    Advice: The 30-year-old hurler racked up eight strikeouts in the contest while issuing three free passes. He carried a bid for a perfect game into the fifth inning where he issued a two-out walk to Gio Urshela. He then walked Akil Baddoo and Carson Kelly to load the bases before getting Zack McKinstry to fly out to end the threat. Those would be the Tigers’ only base runners against him. Blanco got 15 swings and misses on 94 pitches on the day — eight of those on his changeup — while registering an elite CSW of 41 percent.
