    Chourio will start in left field and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Pirates.

    Advice: Chourio was on the bench for a stretch of four straight games from last Wednesday through Saturday, but he's now picked up starts in each of the subsequent four contests. Though he's reached base only twice over his last nine contests and carries a weak .579 OPS for the season into Wednesday's game, Chourio could nonetheless continue to see near-everyday playing time while Jake Bauers sees less time in the corner outfield and fills in at first base for the injured Rhys Hoskins (hamstring). Additionally, the struggling Blake Perkins -- who sat against right-handed starting pitchers both of the previous two days -- seems to have moved into more of a fourth-outfielder role of late.     Riley Greene is getting a scheduled day off Wednesday, with Kerry Carpenter starting in right field against a lefty.

  • Sonny Gray yields five runs to Angels in win
    Sonny Gray won despite giving up five runs in six innings Tuesday against the Angels.

    Advice: Gray had a 0.89 ERA after five starts, but he’s given up 11 runs in his last two outings, putting him at 3.05. On the plus side, he still has an impressive 53/8 K/BB ratio in 41 1/3 innings.     Gray (5-2) earned the win Tuesday over the Angels, giving up five runs on eight hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out nine.

    Advice: Gray was shaky for a second straight start, but he at least got ample run support this time around. The Cardinals took a 5-0 lead in the third inning, which Gray gave back by the end of the fifth. He ended up with the win after Alec Burleson's two-run home run put St. Louis ahead for good in the top of the seventh. Gray is now at a 3.05 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 53:8 K:BB over 41.1 innings across seven starts this season.   • Brent Rooker drives in A’s lone run vs. Astros
    Brent Rooker went 1-for-5 with an RBI in Tuesday’s loss to the Astros.

    Advice: It was an underwhelming night for Rooker and the A’s, as their offense was held to just one run on seven hits before eventually losing in the 10th inning. Rooker’s single in the eighth inning scored Abraham Toro to tie the game and eventually force extra innings, as Rooker has now hit safely in eight straight games.     Carter (back) received a cortisone injection and is out of the lineup Tuesday against the Guardians, and he could rejoin the lineup Friday versus the Angels, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning Newsreports.

    Advice: The 21-year-old hasn't seen the field since Saturday and was diagnosed with lower-back inflammation after an MRI on Monday.     Advice: Alvarez extended his hitting streak to five games with the performance, which was his fourth multi-hit performance in that span. He's also scored four runs and driven in another two during the sample. The strong stretch has also brought his batting average up to .264 across 180 plate appearances on the season, and that mark should continue to rise as the campaign progresses.
