    Anthony Maldonado was terrific in his big league debut against the Nationals on Friday, allowing just three hits over three scoreless innings in a no-decision.

    Advice: The 26-year-old right-hander struck out two batters on the night and didn’t issue a base on balls. Filling in for the injured Jesús Luzardo, Maldonado got seven swings and misses on just 36 pitches in the game — six of those on his slider — while posting a strong CSW of 33 percent. It’s likely that he’ll head back to Triple-A Jacksonville after this start, as the Marlins will want to add another fresh arm to the bullpen while charting a course of action for Luzardo’s rotation spot.     Advice: For a few days at least, Estrada will add a fresh arm to the Padres’ bullpen as the team determines how they would like to handle the rotation spot vacated by Randy Vasquez. The 25-year-old hurler was off to a brilliant start at Triple-A, registering a minuscule 0.84 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and a 13/9 K/BB ratio over 10 2/3 innings in his nine appearances.     Jhoan Duran (oblique) is scheduled to pitch in a minor league rehab game at Triple-A St. Paul on Saturday, after Friday’s scheduled appearance was rained out.

    Advice: As long as everything goes well with that outing, it sounds like the Twins’ closer could be cleared to make his 2024 season debut. Duran threw 27 pitches his last time out and should be expected to have a similar workload on Saturday.     The Pirates recalled Nicolas from Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports.

    Advice: Nicolas ended the 2023 season as part of the Pirates' bullpen. He struggled in his four outings, giving up seven runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out seven over 5.1 frames. Nicolas has looked better in Triple-A this season, posting a 0.84 ERA and 2.06 WHIP over 10.2 innings, and he'll get another shot in Pittsburgh's bullpen.
