    • A’s asking price ‘steep’ in Mason Miller talks
      The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports the Athletics’s asking price for flame-throwing closer Mason Miller is steep.

      Advice: Rosenthal adds that a team source indicates no team has come close to meeting Oakland’s astronomical asking price. The 25-year-old starter-turned-closer has been phenomenal this season, with a microscopic 1.10 ERA, 0.67 WHIP and 33/4 K/BB ratio across 16 1/3 innings (13 appearances). It’s entirely possible that no team will come close to coughing up enough prospect capital to make a deal happen, but Miller figures to be at the epicenter of rumors leading up to the trade deadline later this summer.     • Three-hit game for Ezequiel Tovar against Giants
      Ezequiel Tovar picked up three hits and scored a run in a victory over the Giants on Thursday.

      Advice: Tovar singled twice and also doubled. The RBI came on that double in the fourth inning, and he’s up to eight two-baggers with 13 RBI over the first 36 games of 2024. Tovar still has work to be done, but at the age of 22, he’s got time to figure it all out. A .269/.314/.400 slash gives you an idea of what he’s capable of in the coming seasons.     • Earns win Wednesday
      Clase (2-1) earned the extra-inning win Wednesday over the Tigers, striking out one without allowing a hit or a walk in a scoreless inning.

      Advice: Clase was sharp in the 10th inning despite a fielder's choice and a wild pitch, and the Guardians completed their comeback on a walk-off Brayan Rocchio single in the bottom of the frame. This outing extended Clase's scoreless streak to five innings, and he's gone 12.1 innings without giving up an earned run.     • Two-run blast in loss
      Diaz went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in Wednesday's loss to the Giants.

      Advice: Diaz drove in Colorado's third run of the game with an infield single in the bottom of the fifth and later added a two-run shot in the ninth to bring his team back within two runs of the Giants, though his effort would fall short. It marked the catcher's third multi-hit game already this month, and he's now hit safely in five of his last six contests.     • Stellar in non-save scenario
      Miller fired two perfect innings during which he recorded four strikeouts in the first game of a doubleheader against the Rangers on Wednesday.

      Advice: Miller had last taken the hill May 1, so manager Mark Kotsay opted to give his closer some much-needed work with the Athletics up by five runs. The extended layoff didn't seem to faze Miller in the least, as he located 24 of 32 pitches for strikes in a relatively efficient showing. The hard-throwing right-hander lowered his ERA and WHIP to 1.10 and 0.67, respectively, and with the Athletics much more competitive than expected thus far, Miller's prospects for save opportunities over the long term are brighter than when the season began, despite the recent stretch of inactivity.       Smith went 1-for-5 with two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the A's.

      Advice: After going 0-for-1 as a pinch hitter in a 9-4 loss during the matinee, Smith got the start at shortstop in the nightcap and swiped his first bag of the year in a wild 12-11 victory. The 26-year-old infielder has been productive of late, slashing .297/.422/.541 over the last 12 games with a homer, five RBI and nine runs, but his 6:14 BB:K during that stretch -- not to mention his .373 BABIP on the season -- suggests regression is coming for his batting average.     • Elias Díaz homers, drives in three against Giants
      Elias Díaz went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI against the Giants on Wednesday.

      Advice: Díaz brought a run in to score with a base hit in the fifth inning. With a runner on and two outs in the ninth, he brought the Rockies to within two with a home run off Camilo Doval.       Cease (5-2) picked up the win Wednesday against the Cubs, allowing one hit and two walks over seven scoreless innings. He struck out 12.

      Advice: Cease fell one K shy of his career high in strikeouts and allowed only four total baserunners -- an infield single, two walks and a hit-by-pitch -- en route to his fifth win of his last six starts. He's been making a case for the NL Cy Young in his first season with the Padres, earning a 2.19 ERA and a 0.75 WHIP with 60 strikeouts over 49.1 innings pitched.     • Dylan Cease hurls 12-strikeout gem versus Cubs
      Dylan Cease recorded a season-high 12 strikeouts over seven shutout innings on Wednesday in a win over the Cubs.

      Advice: Cease was simply magnificent during Wednesday afternoon’s matinee at Wrigley Field, inducing a surreal 24 swinging strikes, including 12 on his slider alone, and finished with an elite 39 percent CSW. He limited Chicago’s formidable offense to just three baserunners, one hit and a pair of walks, over seven nearly-flawless frames. His 12 strikeouts were just one shy of his previous career-high mark set back on June 26, 2022. The 28-year-old fantasy ace has been outstanding in his San Diego debut, allowing two earned runs or fewer in seven of his eight starts. He’ll bring a stellar 2.19 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 60/16 K/BB ratio across 49 1/3 innings (eight starts) into a tasty home matchup on Tuesday against the Rockies at Petco Park.
