    • Nails down sixth save
Romano gave up a hit and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning Saturday to record his sixth save of the season in a 10-8 win over the Twins.

Advice: The right-hander stayed perfect in save situations on the season, but Saturday's performance was only the fifth time in nine appearances that Romano has avoided getting tagged with a run. His 4.15 ERA and 1.38 WHIP are well off from his usual standards, but his 8:2 K:BB through 8.2 innings isn't far from the mark, and his stuff appears to be fine -- he topped out at 99 mph with his fastball. • Fans nine in no-decision
Criswell did not factor into the decision Saturday versus the Nationals, permitting two runs on three hits and a walk over five frames. He struck out nine.

Advice: Criswell was dinged by a couple solo home runs; one in the second inning by Joey Meneses and another in the fourth hit by Eddie Rosario. Aside from that, Criswell yielded only one other hit, and his nine punchouts were a career high. Criswell was pulled after five with his pitch count at just 79, as the Red Sox are continuing to keep a close eye on his workload as he transitions from the bullpen (he hasn't thrown more than 83 pitches in a start and has yet to record an out beyond the fifth inning). He's been awfully effective when on the bump, though, with his ERA actually going up to 2.10 after Saturday's outing. Criswell is slated to face his former club, the Rays, his next time out. • Cooper Criswell whiffs nine in no-decision vs. WSH
Cooper Criswell struck out nine over five innings of two-run baseball against the Nationals on Saturday while picking up a no-decision.

Advice: Criswell allowed only three hits, but two of those were solo homers to make that number a smidgen less impressive. The right-hander did miss plenty of bats in this one, however, in what was another effective start for the 27-year-old. Criswell actually saw his ERA go “up” to 2.10 after this outing, and while he may not go deep, he’s worth considering against the Rays on Thursday. Rotoworld Yesterday, 3:28 pm

    • Jordan Romano collects sixth save with scoreless 9th
Jordan Romano struck out two without allowing a run to pick up a save Saturday against the Twins.

Advice: Romano did give up a double, but he was able to keep the Twins off the board while picking up his sixth save of 2024. That number is more impressive when you remember Romano missed time with injury to begin the season. Rotoworld Yesterday, 3:20 pm

    • Devin Williams (back) to resume throwing in May
Devin Williams (back) is scheduled to begin playing catch in two weeks.

Advice: Williams opened the season on the injured list recovering from a pair of stress fractures in his back and isn’t expected to return to Milwaukee’s closer role until around midseason. The 29-year-old All-Star stopper should kick off his throwing program in a few weeks, if not sooner, and be ready to progress to bullpen sessions at some point in June before starting a minor league rehab assignment. • Nearing throwing program
Manager Pat Murphy said Friday that Williams (back) is scheduled to begin playing catch within the next two weeks, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Advice: Williams will be looked at by a doctor within the next few days, which will help determine how far away he is from beginning a throwing program. Though he seems to be trending in the right direction, the 29-year-old closer is still not expected back until around the All-Star break. Rotowire.com Friday, 2:42 pm

    • Jordan Romano gives up run, earns save anyway
Jordan Romano picked up his fifth save despite allowing a run on three hits in the ninth Wednesday against the Phillies.

Advice: Romano entered with a three-run lead. The Phillies had the tying run on second with one out, but Romano was facing the right part of the lineup at that point and got both Kody Clemens and Whit Merrifield to pop up to end the game. It’s the fourth time in eight appearances that Romano has allowed a run, but he’s never given up more than one and he’s converted all of his save chances. Rotoworld Wednesday, 2:10 pm

    • Hangs on for fifth save
Romano earned the save in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Phillies despite allowing one run on three hits in the ninth inning.

Advice: Tasked with protecting a three-run lead in the ninth, Romano allowed a run on a Bryson Stott double. However, he managed to strand the tying runs on second and third, inducing a pair of popouts, to lock down his fifth save of the year. While Romano is a perfect 5-for-5 in save chances, things haven't come easy of late -- he's now allowed a run and multiple hits in back-to-back appearances. Overall, the 31-year-old right-hander sports a 4.70 ERA with a 1.43 WHIP and 6:2 K:BB through his first 7.2 innings this season. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 1:59 pm

    • Takes first loss
Slaten (2-1) was tagged with Tuesday's loss, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk while striking out one in a 4-2 loss to Atlanta.

Advice: Slaten has pitched well out of the bullpen, allowing just two runs over his first 19 innings, but the heart of Atlanta's order got to him for that many in the eighth inning. Ozzie Albies worked him for a six-pitch walk to lead off the inning -- just the third walk allowed -- then Austin Riley and Marcell Ozuna followed with hits. Slaten has a 1.80 ERA and 0.80 WHIP over 20 innings. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 5:48 am
