• Builds up to 45 pitches
Cavalli (elbow) threw 45 pitches over the equivalent of 2.2 innings in a live bullpen session Friday at the Nationals' spring training complex at West Palm Beach, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.

Advice: The Nationals are being deliberate with the 25-year-old's recovery from March 2023 Tommy John surgery, but Cavalli is in the home stretch. The team hasn't indicated when he might begin a rehab assignment, but he could join the big-league rotation in late June or early July. Rotowire.com 28 minutes ago

  • Receives cortisone injection
Scherzer (back) revealed that he received an cortisone injection in his right thumb after undergoing additional tests Wednesday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Advice: The exam revealed that Scherzer's thumb issue is more nerve-related than skeletal, and the right-hander experienced significant improvement following the injection. Scherzer noted that he passed multiple strength tests that would have indicated a ligament issue, and his rehab plan has changed accordingly. The 39-year-old was on the field Friday playing catch for the first time since having his rehab program delayed due to issues with his right thumb and forearm. Rotowire.com 28 minutes ago

  • Not yet throwing breaking balls
Gray threw 35 pitches Friday in a bullpen session at Fenway Park, all fastballs, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.

Advice: The right-hander has been sidelined since April 4 due to a flexor strain in his elbow. Gray is slowly building up in bullpen sessions, and the Nationals haven't indicated yet when he might begin a rehab assignment, but he'll need to start ramping things up quickly if he's going to return to the big-league rotation before the end of May. • Pirates summon Paul Skenes for MLB debut
Pirates selected the contract of RHP Paul Skenes from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Advice: Skenes will take the ball on Saturday afternoon against the Cubs at PNC Park in the most anticipated pitching debut since Stephen Strasburg back in 2010. The flame-throwing 21-year-old first-overall selection from the 2023 MLB Draft has checked every box this season for Triple-A Indianapolis during his meteoric ascent, posting a microscopic 0.99 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 45/8 K/BB ratio across 27 1/3 innings (seven starts). He projects as an immediate impact fantasy contributor, thanks to his elite strikeout upside, despite some looming workload limitations. Rotoworld Today, 7:45 am

  • Hit with loss in quality start
Houck (3-4) took the loss Friday as the Red Sox fell 5-1 to the Nationals, giving up three runs on six hits and a walk over seven innings. He struck out four.

Advice: The right-hander pitched well and gave Boston another quality start, Houck's fifth straight and seventh in eight outings this season, but his offense let him down. Houck will carry a 2.24 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 50:8 K:BB through 52.1 innings into his next start, which lines up to come at home next week against the Rays. Rotowire.com Today, 7:19 am

  • Joe Musgrove (triceps) plays catch on Friday
Joe Musgrove (triceps) played catch on Friday at Petco Park.

Advice: It’s a positive development for Musgrove that he’s resumed throwing already after landing on the injured list back on May 5 with triceps tendinitis. The 31-year-old righty is likely going to need a couple weeks to ramp up his throwing program, but it doesn’t sound like he’s facing a lengthy absence. Nothing official, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see him back in June. Rotoworld Today, 7:17 am

  • Finally gets in win column
Corbin (1-3) picked up the win Friday, allowing one run on seven hits and a walk over five innings in a 5-1 victory over the Red Sox. He struck out four.

Advice: The veteran southpaw tossed 54 of 86 pitches before exiting with a 3-1 lead, and the Washington bullpen was able to shut down Boston the rest of the way. Corbin has begun to show faint signs of turning things around, and over his last four starts he has a 3.54 ERA while serving up only one homer in 20.1 innings. His 14:8 K:BB and 1.57 WHIP over that stretch aren't particularly encouraging, however. He'll try to build on this performance in his next outing, which lines up to come on the road next week against the White Sox. Rotowire.com Today, 7:08 am
  • Earns first MLB win in relief
Brown (1-1) tossed 3.2 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win in Friday's 7-2 victory over the Pirates. He allowed two hits and a walk while striking out six.

Advice: Starter Javier Assad got the hook after 4.1 innings and 89 pitches, which opened the door for Brown to provide some valuable long relief. The 24-year-old was sharp as he recorded a season- and career-best six strikeouts, and the rookie picked up his first MLB win in the process. Brown's fantasy value is limited in his long relief role, but he's pitched well in his debut, compiling 33 strikeouts across 31.1 innings and posting a solid 3.73 ERA, and he has some upside moving forward. • Servais: Bryan Woo (forearm) to make next start
Mariners manager Scott Servais said late Friday that he expects Bryan Woo (forearm) to make his next start.

Advice: All indications are that Woo will make his next start on Wednesday against the Royals after making a precautionary exit from Friday’s return outing against the Athletics after experiencing forearm tightness during an extended break between the fourth and fifth innings. His fastball velocity dipped significantly in the fifth inning following the layoff, which led to a visit from Seattle’s training staff and his removal from the contest. It doesn’t sound like a serious concern at this juncture, but it’s certainly a situation fantasy managers should monitor closely. There should be some clarity on his status at some point in the coming days when he throws his usual between-starts bullpen session. Stay tuned. Rotoworld Today, 7:03 am
