• Griffin Canning solid for five against Astros
Griffin Canning allowed two runs in five innings Tuesday in a no-decision against the Astros.

Advice: The runs came on back-to-back homers from Kyle Tucker and Yordan Alvarez in the first inning. Canning was effective afterwards, though he ended the day with two strikeouts and three walks. His velocity has started to creep up a little after being down two mph from last year initially, but his 16% strikeout rate isn’t impressive at all. Rotoworld Yesterday, 9:02 pm
  • Carlos Estévez takes loss in 10th versus Astros
Carlos Estévez dropped to 0-3 after allowing the automatic runner to score in the 10th against the Astros on Tuesday.

Advice: Estévez had no cushion after the Angels failed to score in the top of the inning, and he was stuck facing the heart of the Astros order with Kyle Tucker on second. The decision was made to walk Yordan Alvarez to start the inning. Estevez then retired Alex Bregman before giving up a game-winning hit to Jeremy Peña. We’re not at all impressed by the job that Estévez is going, but this one doesn’t reflect badly on him. Since both Estévez and Hunter Strickland were pitching for the second straight day tonight, Adam Cimber might be in line for a save chance Wednesday. Rotoworld Yesterday, 9:02 pm
  • Luis Rengifo hits two-run homers against Astros
Luis Rengifo had a two-run homer and an RBI single versus the Astros on Tuesday.

Advice: Rengifo definitely wasn’t Ron Washington’s favorite player at the beginning of the year, but he’s been one of the best Angels thus far, having hit .316/.366/.474 in 124 plate appearances. Statcast thinks he’s way overachieving, given that his exit velocity numbers are significantly worse than his career marks, but things will probably even out there somewhat; his .840 OPS won’t quite hold up, but his exit velocity numbers should get better. • Jon Gray exits Tuesday start with groin tightness
Jon Gray was removed from Tuesday’s start against the Phillies with right groin tightness.

Advice: That explains why Gray was finished after just 75 pitches (50 strikes) over five frames in an abbreviated outing. The 32-year-old righty was charged with two runs on four hits with four strikeouts and three walks. The severity of the injury is a bit murky at the moment, but there should be some clarity on his status at some point in the near future. It’s unclear whether he’ll be ready to make his next start on Sunday against the Twins. Rotoworld Yesterday, 6:38 pm

  • Exits start with groin tightness
Manager Bruce Bochy said Tuesday that Gray was removed from his start against the Phillies due to right groin tightness, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Gray was able to get through five innings before exiting his start, allowing two earned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out four batters. Bochy didn't specify how severe Gray's injury is, so it remains unclear if the right-hander is at risk of missing his next start, which is tentatively scheduled for Sunday in Minnesota. • Called up and starting
Hill had his contract selected from Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday. He's batting eighth and playing right field against the Phillies.

Advice: Hill will fill a depth role in the outfield for the Rangers, taking the roster spot of pitcher Austin Pruitt (knee) who was moved to the 60-day injured list. With Adolis Garcia (forearm) banged up and sitting Tuesday, Hill will slot into the starting lineup for his 2024 debut. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 12:39 pm
  • Rangers select contract of Derek Hill from AAA
Rangers selected the contract of OF Derek Hill from Triple-A Round Rock.

Advice: Hill is added to the 40-man and active roster by the Rangers after hitting .333 with a 1.086 OPS, eight homers and six stolen bases in the Pacific Coast League. A former first-round pick, Hill will likely only be a bench option while he’s with Texas. Davis Wendzel was sent down to Round Rock in a previous corresponding transaction. • Batting leadoff Tuesday
Hurtubise is starting in left field and batting leadoff in Tuesday's game versus the Padres.

Advice: It's Hurtubise's fourth start in eight games since being recalled and the first time in those starts that he didn't bat ninth. With Jonathan India and Will Benson struggling and TJ Friedl (thumb) hurt again, the Reds are looking for someone to establish themselves at the leadoff spot. The odds would seem to be against Hurtubise being that guy, but he did show good on-base skills in the minors with a .434 OBP. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 11:44 am
  • Records two steals Monday
Tucker went 1-for-3 with two walks, one RBI and two stolen bases in Monday's 9-7 loss to the Angels.

Advice: After a two-homer game versus the Brewers on Sunday, Tucker showcased his speed Monday. The outfielder is in the midst of another excellent stretch with seven homers and four steals over his last 14 contests. For the season, he's up to a .288/.421/.618 slash line with 15 home runs, 34 RBI, 33 runs scored, nine steals and 11 doubles over 47 games. Tucker has had 30 homers and 30 steals in separate seasons, but he's on pace to hit both milestones in the same campaign for the first time in 2024. Rotowire.com Monday, 10:46 pm
