      Advice: Bibee looked sharp early Wednesday, allowing just one hit through his first three innings. However, things went south in the fourth, when Bibee allowed four runs on four hits. While Cleveland would ultimately rally for a win in 10 innings, it was another disappointing start from Bibee -- he's now allowed 10 runs over nine innings in his last two outings. Overall, the 25-year-old right-hander is 2-1 with a 4.91 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 44:13 K:BB in eight starts (40.1 innings) this season.     • Jordan Romano gives up run, earns save anyway
      Jordan Romano picked up his fifth save despite allowing a run on three hits in the ninth Wednesday against the Phillies.

      Advice: Romano entered with a three-run lead. The Phillies had the tying run on second with one out, but Romano was facing the right part of the lineup at that point and got both Kody Clemens and Whit Merrifield to pop up to end the game.       Romano earned the save in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Phillies despite allowing one run on three hits in the ninth inning.

      Advice: Tasked with protecting a three-run lead in the ninth, Romano allowed a run on a Bryson Stott double. However, he managed to strand the tying runs on second and third, inducing a pair of popouts, to lock down his fifth save of the year. While Romano is a perfect 5-for-5 in save chances, things haven't come easy of late -- he's now allowed a run and multiple hits in back-to-back appearances.     • Pirates will promote Paul Skenes to start Saturday
      The Pirates announced Wednesday that top pitching prospect Paul Skenes will be promoted from Triple-A Indianapolis to make his major league debut Saturday against the Cubs.

      Advice: The 21-year-old fireballer was making a mockery of the hitting at Triple-A with Indianapolis, registering a 0.99 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and a ludicrous 45/8 K/BB ratio over 27 1/3 innings of work in his seven starts. The Pirates are going to limit his innings this season, which will curtail some of his upside in the wins department, but he’s going to be an immediate impact contributor in all fantasy leagues and needs to be rostered everywhere at this point.       The Pirates announced that Skenes will be promoted from Triple-A Indianapolis to start Saturday against the Cubs at PNC Park.

      Advice: Skenes likely won't be officially added to the 40-man roster and 26-man active roster until Saturday in advance of what should be one of the most highly anticipated MLB debuts for a pitching prospect in recent memory. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 First-Year Player Draft, Skenes has been utterly dominant through his first seven starts at Indianapolis this season, pitching to a 0.99 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 45:8 K:BB over 27.1 innings. While he shouldn't be expected to immediately replicate the sterling ratios he produced in the minors, the flame-throwing right-hander should continue to make bats miss at a high clip as he makes the jump to the majors. The Pirates haven't revealed what the impending addition of Skenes means for the rest of the pitching staff, but the club could move to a six-man rotation to help keep the prized 21-year-old's workload in check during the 2024 season.     • Tanner Bibee pulled after four against Tigers
      Tanner Bibee gave up four runs in four innings Wednesday in a no-decision against the Tigers.

      Advice: Bibee cruised through three innings, allowing just one single, but everything went wrong in the fourth, which started with a single to conclude a 10-pitch at-bat. The Tigers wound up getting three more hits, as well as a key HBP, to produce a four-run inning in which Bibee threw more pitches (43) than in the first three combined (39). It was such a long inning that the Guardians didn’t bring Bibee back out for the fifth.       Wednesday’s scheduled contest between the Cardinals and Mets in New York was postponed due to rain.

      Advice: The game will be made up on August 5. The Cardinals’ scheduled starter, Sonny Gray, will pitch on Thursday against the Brewers.       Gray and the Cardinals won't play the Mets on Wednesday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.

      Rangers general manager Chris Young said Wednesday that Scherzer (back) will remain shut down from throwing for the next few days due to a right thumb and forearm issue, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.

      Advice: Scherzer has been on the 15-day injured list all season while completing his recovery from Dec. 15 surgery to address a herniated disc in his back, but it's his pitching arm that has presented complications for him coming out of his first rehab start with Triple-A Round Rock back on April 24. Young said that Scherzer won't resume ramping up again until the tightness and discomfort in his arm completely subsides, so the veteran right-hander still looks to be multiple weeks away from being ready to return from the IL.
