      Gasser is mulling whether to have surgery on his left elbow after a third opinion concurred with the second that an operation is likely needed at some point, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

      Advice: Gasser is dealing with UCL damage in the elbow, and the Brewers are leaving the decision of surgery or rest and rehab up to the 25-year-old left-hander. He's been shut down from throwing for nearly three weeks already, so Gasser is facing a lengthy ramp-up even if he opts for the non-surgical route.     • Sharp in first rehab start
      Kershaw (shoulder) completed three innings in a rehab start with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga on Wednesday, allowing one run on two hits and one walk while striking out five batters.

      Advice: Kershaw impressed in his first game action since undergoing offseason shoulder surgery, throwing 26 of his 36 pitches for strikes and hitting 90 miles per hour -- right around his 2023 regular-season velocity -- with his fastball. The veteran left-hander began a bit shakily in giving up a one-out, first-inning triple that was cashed in for a run on a sacrifice fly, but Kershaw was in complete control thereafter, with his only walk coming on a pitch-clock violation that appeared to be intentional in order to allow him to face another batter.       Brown (4-5) earned the win against the White Sox on Wednesday, allowing one run on seven hits and no walks while striking out six batters over six innings.

      Advice: The only run scored against Brown came on an Andrew Benintendi solo homer in the fourth inning. Otherwise, Brown was solid again -- all six of Chicago's other hits were singles, and the right-handed hurler didn't issue any walks for the second straight outing. Brown had an awful 9.78 ERA through 23 innings across his first six starts this season, but he's since lowered that mark to 4.72. He's been especially impressive of late, racking up six straight quality starts and limiting his opponents to one run over 19 frames while posting a 22:4 K:BB across his past three outings.       Hunter Brown held the White Sox to one run with six strikeouts over six innings to earn the win on Wednesday.

      Advice: Brown has been fantastic over his last several starts. The only run he allowed Wednesday came on a solo homer by Andrew Benintendi in the fourth inning. It was the only run he’s allowed over his last three outings. Brown scattered six other hits while striking out six batters to zero walks.     • Clayton Kershaw goes three in first rehab start
      Clayton Kershaw (shoulder) went three innings in his first minor league rehab start at High-A Rancho Cucamonga on Wednesday night.

      Advice: The 36-year-old southpaw threw 36 pitches on the night — 26 of them for strikes — while hitting 90 mph on his fastball. Kershaw surrendered one run on two hits and a walk while punching out five in the ballgame. He’ll continue to work every fifth day or so in the minor leagues to build up his stamina with a goal of rejoining the Dodgers’ rotation at some point around the All-Star break.       Severino did not factor into the decision in Tuesday's 7-6 win over Texas, allowing six runs on eight hits and one walk over 6.1 innings. He struck out one.

      Advice: After yielding just one run through four innings, the New York right-hander unraveled in the fifth, allowing five runs on five hits, including two homers. Severino also produced only five whiffs on his way to collecting a season-worst one strikeout. The 30-year-old's velocity on his entire arsenal was down in this outing, anchored by a sinker that averaged 94.5 mph, down 1.2 mph.       Luis Severino was tagged for six runs in 6 1/3 innings by the Rangers on Tuesday.

      Advice: Severino struck out one and gave up two homers, which is never a good ratio. His velocity was down a bit tonight, and he wound up with just five missed swings and a 17% CSW. As much twitter concern as there was about Severino after his season debut 2 1/2 months ago, this is probably his most discouraging outing of the season to date.       Garrett struck out six and allowed one run on five hits and no walks over six innings in a no-decision during Monday's extra-innings loss to the Cardinals.

      Advice: Garrett served up a solo homer to Mike Siani in the fifth inning that turned out to be his only mistake in an otherwise stellar showing. The left-hander didn't issue a walk, making it the fourth time in his seven starts this season that he didn't allow a free pass. The 26-year-old has been inconsistent, as he has allowed four or more earned runs in four of his starts but has given up just two total runs in his other three appearances.     • Wild but effective Monday
      Hicks allowed four hits and four walks while striking out four batters over five scoreless innings in a no-decision against the Cubs on Monday.

      Advice: Hicks recently battled an illness but was able to take his regular turn in the rotation Monday. He threw only 48 of 87 pitches for strikes and tied a season high in issuing four free passes, but he was able to work around constant traffic on the basepaths to finish with five scoreless frames. It was the first time Hicks has held an opponent scoreless since his season debut against San Diego on March 30, though he's been quite reliable in yielding three or fewer earned runs in all but one of his 15 outings.
