    • Hurls quality start Monday
Garrett struck out six and allowed one run on five hits and no walks over six innings in a no-decision versus the Cardinals on Monday.

Advice: Garrett served up a solo homer to Mike Siani in the fifth that turned out to be his only mistake in an otherwise stellar showing. The left-hander didn't issue a walk in his six innings of work, making it the fourth time in his seven starts this season that he didn't allow a free pass. The 26-year-old has been inconsistent this season, as he has allowed 22 runs in four of his starts but has given up just two runs in his other three appearances. • Wild but effective Monday
Hicks allowed four hits and four walks while striking out four batters over five scoreless innings in a no-decision against the Cubs on Monday.

Advice: Hicks recently battled an illness but was able to take his regular turn in the rotation Monday. He threw only 48 of 87 pitches for strikes and tied a season high in issuing four free passes, but he was able to work around constant traffic on the basepaths to finish with five scoreless frames. It was the first time Hicks has held an opponent scoreless since his season debut against San Diego on March 30, though he's been quite reliable in yielding three or fewer earned runs in all but one of his 15 outings. The right-hander holds a 2.82 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 68:28 K:BB through 76.2 innings on the season. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 9:18 pm

    • Crushed in short outing
Gray (2-3) allowed nine runs on 11 hits in three-plus innings Monday, striking out two and taking a loss against the Mets.

Advice: Gray never found his footing Monday and the Mets took advantage. Most of the damage came during a six-run second inning and his night was finished after allowing a two-run shot to Brandon Nimmo in the fourth. Gray had allowed nine earned runs over his previous 50 innings before Monday's brutal outing. His season ERA shot up from 2.17 to 3.31 as a result. Gray's next outing is projected to be in Milwaukee. • Hicks throws five shutout innings against Cubs
Jordan Hicks threw five shutout innings and got a no-decision against the Cubs on Monday.

Advice: Hicks gave up four hits, walked four and struck out four. It was a solid start for Hicks, who lowered his ERA to 2.82 on the season with the effort. The converted reliever hasn’t completed six innings in a start since April, but he continues to pitch well while he’s out there. The 27-year-old right-hander is set to face his former team the Cardinals on the road this weekend.

    • Gray hammered in loss to Mets Monday
Jon Gray allowed nine runs in three innings and took the loss against the Mets on Sunday.

Advice: Gray gave up 11 hits, walked none and struck out two. Ouch. Gray’s ERA jumped up from 2.17 to 3.31 with this blow up. He probably didn’t deserve that 2.17 ERA to begin with given his xFIP was 3.52 entering Monday’s start. The 32-year-old right-hander will look to bounce back against the Royals at home this weekend.

    • Drives in two runs in win
Cruz went 1-for-4 with two RBI in Monday's 4-1 win over the Reds.

Advice: With Paul Skenes dealing on the mound, Cruz's two-run single in the first inning ended up being the deciding runs. The 25-year-old now has 10 of his 30 RBI for the season over his past nine games. He's been swinging a hot bat since the calendar turned to June, slashing .295/.325/.525 over his last 11 games. • Braxton Garrett bounces back against Cardinals
Braxton Garrett yielded one run over six innings on Monday in a no-decision against the Cardinals.

Advice: Garrett recorded six strikeouts and held the Cardinals to just a fifth-inning solo homer by Michael Siani over six strong frames. It was a much-needed rebound effort for the 26-year-old lefty after being tagged for 11 runs (nine earned) over his previous two starts against the Mets and Rays, respectively. He’ll bring a lackluster 5.35 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 34/4 K/BB ratio across 37 innings (seven starts) into a home outing on Sunday against the Mariners. Rotoworld Yesterday, 7:27 pm

    • Oneil Cruz hits two-run single, Pirates edge Reds
Oneil Cruz delivered a two-run single on Monday, lifting the Pirates to a 4-1 victory over the Reds.

Advice: Cruz put the Pirates ahead for good with a two-run single off Reds starter Carson Spiers in the opening frame, which wound up being more than enough run support for young ace Paul Skenes and Pittsburgh’s bullpen in a low-scoring affair at PNC Park. It was somehow the first meeting this season between the longtime division rivals. Cruz hasn’t exactly torn the cover off the ball this season, but he’s shown flashes of the big-time upside that makes him one of the most exciting young players in the game. • On bench Monday
Yoshida (hand) is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Blue Jays.

Advice: Yoshida was lifted from Sunday's 9-3 win over the Yankees in the seventh inning after being hit on the hand by a pitch, but his removal might have been precautionary more than anything. According to Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald, the lefty-hitting Yoshida's absence from the lineup Monday is a pre-planned decision, as the Blue Jays are bringing a lefty (Yusei Kikuchi) to the hill, and the Red Sox wanted to give outfielder Tyler O'Neill a day off from playing defense and instead use him as a designated hitter. Assuming his hand isn't bothering him, Yoshida should re-enter the lineup Tuesday, when the Red Sox are scheduled to face right-hander Chris Bassitt. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 2:50 pm
