• Locks down 16th save
Bednar earned the save Wednesday against the Reds, pitching a perfect ninth inning to seal a 1-0 victory.

Advice: It's the second straight hitless appearance from Bednar after he allowed home runs in each of his previous two outings. Still, the right-hander has been solid of late following a rocky start to the campaign, allowing just three runs in his last 17.1 innings. Overall, Bednar's converted 16-of-19 save opportunities this year while pitching to a 5.17 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 32:7 K:BB across 31.1 innings. Rotowire.com Today, 2:52 pm

  • David Bednar works perfect frame for 16th save
David Bednar hurled a perfect ninth inning on Wednesday against the Reds to record his 16th save of the season.

Advice: Bednar got the call to protect a one-run lead in the ninth inning and needed just 11 pitches (eight strikes) to set down the heart of Cincinnati’s lineup. He got Elly De La Cruz to pop up and Spencer Steer to fly out before coaxing a game-ending fly out from Jake Fraley to slam the door. The 29-year-old righty has recorded saves on back-to-back days against the Reds after suffering a blown save last Friday against the Rockies in his previous appearance. • Fans seven in no-decision
Assad allowed one run on five hits and two walks while striking out seven batters over five innings in a no-decision against San Francisco on Monday.

Advice: Assad needed 92 pitches to get through five frames, but he was effective during his time on the mound, limiting the Giants to just a fourth-inning run. However, the right-hander couldn't pick up his first win since mid-May, as Chicago's offense wasn't able to push across a run until after his departure. Nonetheless, this was a nice bounce-back for Assad after he surrendered seven earned runs over 10.1 frames across his previous two outings. Rotowire.com Monday, 9:47 pm

Assad struck out at least seven batters for the fourth time in his last five starts. His ERA is now 2.75 on the year. The 26-year-old right-hander is set to face the Mets at home this weekend.

  • Records 15th save
Bednar pitched a perfect ninth inning to pick up the save against the Reds in Monday's 4-1 win.

Advice: After serving up homers in each of his last two appearances, Bednar got back on track with a clean frame Monday. Bednar had a disastrous start to the season with 14 earned runs allowed in his first 13 outings, but he's turned it around with a 1.88 ERA over his last 19.1 innings. Despite the 5.34 ERA for the season, Bednar remains one of the better late-inning options, as his 15 saves are tied for eighth most in the majors. Rotowire.com Monday, 7:55 pm

  • David Bednar silences Reds to notch 15th save
David Bednar tossed a perfect frame on Monday against the Reds to record his 15th save of the season.

Advice: Bednar was summoned to protect a three-run lead in the final frame and required just 11 pitches (eight strikes) to spin a flawless frame. It was a nice rebound effort for the 29-year-old stopper after giving up solo homers in each of his previous two appearances. He’s converted 15 of his 18 save opportunities on the year. • Nearing mound work
Blue Jays manager John Schneider said that Romano (elbow) threw from 90-to-120 feet Monday, Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic reports.

Advice: According to Mike Wilner of the Toronto Star, if Romano responds well to Monday's workout, he'll be cleared to throw off a mound Wednesday for the first time since landing on the 15-day injured list June 1 with right elbow inflammation. Since he's a closer who typically doesn't pitch more than an inning in his appearances, Romano won't require an extensive ramp-up period, but the Blue Jays will still likely want to send him out on a brief minor-league rehab assignment prior to activating him from the IL. Yimi Garcia has served as the Blue Jays' primary closer while Romano has been on the shelf, but Garcia is considered day-to-day with an elbow issue of his own. Chad Green appears to be next in line for saves out of the Toronto bullpen. Rotowire.com Monday, 1:41 pm

  • Handed loss Friday
Webb (1-4) allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit and one walk while striking out one over one inning to take the extra-innings loss versus the Phillies on Friday.

Advice: Alec Bohm delivered a two-run double in the 11th inning, and the Orioles couldn't produce a fourth comeback in the contest. That play ended an 11-inning scoreless streak for Webb, who has been steady in a setup role for Baltimore this season. Overall, he has a 1.95 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 29:15 K:BB while adding two saves and seven holds across 32.1 innings. Webb's 4.2 BB/9 is not outside of his usual level of performance but is still high, so he may have trouble sustaining his strong ratios over a full season. Rotowire.com Saturday, 10:11 am

  • Serves up homer
Bednar allowed one earned run on one hit while striking out one Friday against the Rockies.

Advice: Bednar was called upon to preserve a 5-1 lead in the ninth inning. He retired the first two batters he faced without issue but then served up a solo home run to Charlie Blackmon. Bednar has now given up a home run in consecutive appearances, though the Pirates still won on both occasions. Rotowire.com Saturday, 7:09 am
