Rice manned first base in place of Anthony Rizzo (hand) in his debut and overcame an early fielding gaffe to turn in a solid first outing as a pro. Rice was slashing .275/.393/.532 with 15 homers and 36 RBI in the minors this season.     Willson Contreras (forearm) went 1-for-3 with a run scored on Tuesday in a minor league rehab game for Triple-A Memphis.

    Advice: Rice earned a call-up after slashing .275/.393/.532 with 15 home runs, nine stolen bases and a 56:40 K:BB over 268 plate appearances between Double-A Trenton and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He's a catcher and a first baseman but is in line to be used mostly in the latter capacity while Anthony Rizzo (arm) is sidelined.     Advice: Rice ascends to the majors in the wake of Anthony Rizzo’s forearm fracture and is expected to receive the majority of the playing time at the cold corner moving forward. He’s at first base and batting sixth on Tuesday night against the Orioles in his big-league debut. The 25-year-old burgeoning slugger, who has recorded a sublime 925 OPS with 15 homers and nine steals across 60 games this season in the upper minors, is extremely appealing for fantasy managers since he’ll still have catcher eligibility moving forward. He doesn’t strike out a ton for a power-hitting backstop and also offers a little bit of speed as well for fantasy purposes.     Advice: Rice will be called up with Anthony Rizzo heading to the injured list due to the fracture in Rizzo’s arm. The 25-year-old has hit well in his 60 minor-league games in 2024 with a .925 OPS, 15 homers and nine stolen bases. He’s made just 11 appearances above Double-A, but he’s slashed .333/.440/.619 in those chances with three homers in 42 at-bats.     Advice: Contreras will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday and might require less than a week of rehab games before rejoining the Cardinals lineup. Woo cautions that the catcher's timeline for rejoining the big club remains tentative, and a firmer return date may not come into focus until Contreras gets a few rehab games under his belt.     Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said that Contreras (forearm) is likely to begin a rehab assignment Tuesday with either Triple-A Memphis or Double-A Springfield, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

    Advice: Contreras reached a meaningful milestone in his recovery from surgery to repair a fractured left forearm by taking batting practice earlier in the weekend, and with the veteran backstop apparently coming out of the workout without any renewed soreness, he looks like he's ready for game action. Because he's been on the shelf since May 8, Contreras could stay on his minor-league rehab assignment throughout the week before potentially returning from the 10-day injured list before the end of June.
