    • Frankie Montas holds Yankees to two runs in victory
Frankie Montas gave up two runs over five innings to pick up a win over the Yankees on Thursday.

Advice: Montas struck out four while walking three and allowing four hits. The right-hander held the Yankees scoreless for the first four frames before allowing a pair of homers in the fifth. The results have been much better as of late for Montas, and while he isn’t missing a ton of bats, he’s allowed no more than two runs in three-straight starts. He’s scheduled to face the Rockies on Tuesday. Rotoworld 20 minutes ago

    • Chris Bassitt allows four to Astros over five
Chris Bassitt went five innings while allowing four runs in a loss to the Astros on Thursday.

Advice: Bassitt, 35, gave up eight hits, walked four and struck out three. Most of the damage was done early, as he gave up three runs in the first inning before settling down. The right-hander had allowed just three total earned runs over his last two starts, so it goes without saying this outing — while not horrific — didn’t keep that good run going. His final start before the break is scheduled Wednesday against the Giants in San Francisco. Rotoworld 38 minutes ago

    • Luis Gil has been struggling with release point
According to Yankees manager Aaron Boone, Luis Gil’s recent struggles could be impacted by an inconsistent release point.

Advice: Boone said that the Yankees have noticed that Gil’s recent point has been inconsistent of late. That could be tied to fatigue since he’s pitching more innings than he ever has before or it could simply be a mechanical issue with an easy fix. The inconsistent release point could also be leading Gil to tip some of his pitches, which might provide more context to why the Orioles were able to pounce on his fastball so much in his recent start. It should also be noted that Gil is making many non-competitive pitches and leaving pitches over the heart of the plate, so the release point isn’t the only issue to be fixed, but it might be one that can be addressed soon. • Taking seat Thursday
Varsho is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Astros.

Advice: Varsho started the past four games but will receive Thursday off after going 2-for-14 with a double and eight strikeouts during that stretch. Kevin Kiermaier will start in center field against Houston lefty Framber Valdez. Rotowire.com Today, 8:36 am

    • Three-run shot in loss
Freeman went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer and two walks in Wednesday's loss to the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Freeman put the Dodgers ahead with a three-run blast in the bottom of the first and proceeded to reach base four times in the contest in a losing effort. It was the first baseman's 13th long ball of the season and the fourth in his last 15 games. Over that latter stretch he's batting .327 (18-for-55) with 14 RBI and 10 runs scored. Freeman has also recorded multiple hits in back-to-back games and in three of his last four. Rotowire.com Today, 7:50 am

    • Fans seven in eighth win
Bello (8-5) picked up the win Wednesday, allowing one run on seven hits and a walk over 6.2 innings in a 7-2 victory over the Marlins. He struck out seven.

Advice: The 25-year-old right-hander was given a breather by the Red Sox -- his last start came back on June 25, when he lasted only 2.1 innings and surrendered seven runs to the Blue Jays -- and it paid off, as Bello produced his fourth quality start of the season on 91 pitches (61 strikes). The seven Ks were his highest total since May 28, while Wednesday's outing was the first time he hadn't issues multiple free passes since May 17. Bello should resume his regular turn in the rotation after this performance, which lines him up to take the mound at home early next week against the A's. Rotowire.com Today, 6:06 am
    • Begins swinging bat
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Wednesday that Carter (back) flew to Arizona last week and has begun swinging a bat, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

Advice: This marks the first time Carter has swung a bat since landing on the injured list in early June. Bochy indicated the plan calls for Carter to face live pitching in the next few days. The injury was first described as lower-back tightness but was then reclassified as a stress reaction, which prompted the lengthy rehab. Rotowire.com Today, 5:17 am

    • Opens scoring with homer
Machado went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 6-4 win over the Rangers.

Advice: Machado has picked up the pace in the power department with five homers over his last 12 contests. He's batting .354 (17-for-48) in that span while adding 14 RBI. The third baseman is up to .264/.314/.411 slash line with 11 homers, 47 RBI, 39 runs scored and five stolen bases over 82 contests. Considering he's exceeded 30 homers seven times in his career, it shouldn't be surprising if he has a big second half in 2024, though his slow start could prevent him from reaching that milestone this year. • Freddie Freeman reaches four times, homers Wednesday
Freddie Freeman went 2-for-2 with a three-run homer and two walks against the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.

Advice: Freeman put the Dodgers on the board with a three-run blast off Cristian Mena in the first inning. He then drew a pair of walks and added a base hit in the eighth to reach in all four plate appearances. The 34-year-old first baseman is hitting .302/.404/.516 with 13 homers, 54 runs scored, 56 RBI, and three steals across 381 plate appearances. Rotoworld Yesterday, 10:38 pm
