    • Rosenthal: Gil could move to pen when Cole returns
      According to Ken Rosenthal, the Yankees “are likely to ‘back off’ on Luis Gil in order to have him as a factor for the playoffs.”

      Advice: On one hand, backing off Gil makes some sense. The 25-year-old has already thrown 49 innings this season and has not thrown more than 96 innings in any season since 2019. However, when Yankees manager Aaron Boone was asked about his plans for Gil, he mentioned that Gerrit Cole is likely four to six weeks away from returning, which is an eternity during a baseball season. Moving Gil to the bullpen could make sense on the surface, but it’s impossible to tell what position the Yankees rotation will be in by the time Cole comes back.       The Rays reinstated Baz (elbow) from the injured list Thursday and optioned him to Triple-A Durham.

      Advice: Baz has been on the injured list all season while completing the final stages of recovery from his July 2022 Tommy John surgery. The 24-year-old righty started four games at Triple-A during his rehab assignment, posting a 6.00 ERA and 1.92 WHIP while striking out eight batters and walking 11 through 12 innings.     • Shane Baz continues to improve in rehab starts
      Shane Baz allowed one run on three hits in four innings for Triple-A Durham on Wednesday night.

      Advice: More importantly, Baz was up to 76 pitches and induced 14 whiffs in just four innings on the day. He had a 66 percent strike right but his overall command still needs some work, walking three batters and hitting one. His stuff has graded out above-average but command is often the last thing to come back after Tommy John surgery, so we’ll hope that he can iron that out in his next starts.       Beeks allowed one earned run on two hits and a walk to blow the save Wednesday against the Athletics.

      Advice: Beeks was tasked with protecting a one-run lead and retired two of the first three batters he faced. However, he went on to allow the next two hitters to reach base, blowing his first save since taking over as the Rockies' closer. Beeks has allowed only two earned runs in seven innings since stepping into ninth-inning duties, but his 1.57 WHIP and 6:4 K:BB in that span are more indicative of his future success.       Advice: This was Baz's best rehab appearance since starting the assignment May 4. He's still fighting his control, as he has walked 11 batters across 12 innings, though that shouldn't come as a significant surprise given his lengthy layoff since last pitching in a meaningful game.       Jalen Beeks allowed one run in the ninth inning to blow the save chance against the Athletics.

      Advice: Beeks was summoned to close out the game with a one-run lead in the ninth inning. A single and a walk put a runner in scoring position with two outs before Zack Gelof knocked a base hit to drive in the game-tying run. Beeks was able to keep the game tied to send it to extras.       Chisholm went 1-for-4 with a solo home run during Wednesday's 1-0 win over the Brewers.

      Advice: Chisholm clubbed a leadoff homer in the first inning off Freddy Peralta, a long ball that ended up being the difference. In his last 16 games, Chisholm is batting .308 with three home runs, 13 runs and four stolen bases. The 26-year-old is one of seven players with at least seven long balls and nine stolen bases, joining Elly De La Cruz, Bobby Witt, Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Kyle Tucker on the exclusive list.       Bassitt (4-6) earned the win Wednesday over the White Sox, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out four over seven scoreless innings.

      Advice: Bassitt threw 70 of 107 pitches for strikes and no trouble protecting the large lead the Blue Jays established in the second inning. He's allowed three runs or fewer in each of his four starts in May, with Wednesday's effort being his best game of the year.       Advice: Bello completed six innings for the second time in eight outings this season, and he earned his second quality start in the process. The Rays scored three times in the second inning, but the Red Sox offense rallied for eight runs over the fifth and sixth frames to give Bello plenty of support. The right-hander is now at a 4.04 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 37:13 K:BB through 42.1 innings. Walks typically haven't been an outsized issue for Bello, so there's not much reason for concern that he was a little wild Wednesday.
