• Reynaldo López shuts out Tigers for five in win
Reynaldo López scattered seven hits over five scoreless innings in a victory over the Tigers on Wednesday.

Advice: Both Lopez and Tarik Skubal allowed seven hits in this one, but every one López surrendered was a single and they were all spread out; he allowed one each in the first three innings and two apiece in the fourth and fifth. It meant López was in no position to go deep today, but he didn’t need to in a 7-0 game. López moved to 5-2 with a 1.57 ERA. Rotoworld Today, 12:31 pm

  • Matthew Liberatore allows two runs in spot start
Matthew Liberatore gave up two runs over 3 2/3 innings on Wednesday in a spot start against the Marlins.

Advice: Liberatore drew the starting assignment for Wednesday’s series finale at loanDepot park after Kyle Gibson was scratched a couple hours prior to first pitch due to back tightness and turned in his longest outing of the season. He gave up a pair of solo homers in the opening frame, but managed to keep Miami scoreless into the fourth inning before handing things over to the rest of the Cardinals’ bullpen. He struck out one and also issued one walk. There’s a chance he gets a couple additional starts moving forward, but has seemingly settled in nicely as a throwback swingman for St. Louis. It’s a disappointing outcome given his prospect pedigree, but he’s done a nice job gobbling up innnings this season at the highest level. Rotoworld Today, 12:26 pm

  • Guardians lose reliever Nick Sandlin to IL
Guardians placed RHP Nick Sandlin on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to June 17, with lower back inflammation.

Advice: Sandlin gave up three runs in his last appearance to take his ERA from 2.54 to 3.49. The Guardians will lean a little more on Scott Barlow and Sam Hentges now. Rotoworld Today, 11:58 am

  • Guardians recall Darren McCaughan
Guardians recalled RHP Darren McCaughan from Triple-A Columbus.

Advice: It’s McCaughan’s first time in the majors with the Guardians, who picked him up from the Marlins last month. He has a 9.16 ERA in 18 2/3 innings since debuting with the Mariners in 2021. His Triple-A ERA stood at 5.06 through six starts with Columbus. Rotoworld Today, 11:54 am
  • David Bednar works perfect frame for 16th save
David Bednar hurled a perfect ninth inning on Wednesday against the Reds to record his 16th save of the season.

Advice: Bednar got the call to protect a one-run lead in the ninth inning and needed just 11 pitches (eight strikes) to set down the heart of Cincinnati’s lineup. He got Elly De La Cruz to pop up and Spencer Steer to fly out before coaxing a game-ending fly out from Jake Fraley to slam the door. The 29-year-old righty has recorded saves on back-to-back days against the Reds after suffering a blown save last Friday against the Rockies in his previous appearance. • Summoned from Triple-A
The Guardians recalled McCaughan from Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday, Tom Withers of the Associated Press reports.

Advice: McCaughan will be joining the big club for the first time since being acquired from the Marlins on May 9. The 28-year-old right-hander had been starting at Columbus, logging a 5.06 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 33:12 K:BB in 32 innings. He'll work out of the bullpen in his first stint with Cleveland, joining the relief ranks as a replacement for right-hander Nick Sandlin (back), who was placed on the 15-day injured list. • Shelved with back inflammation
The Guardians placed Sandlin on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with lower back inflammation, Tom Withers of the Associated Press reports.

Advice: Sandlin's move to the IL comes three days after he was lit up for three earned runs on three hits and two walks while failing to record an out in his relief appearance in Sunday's 7-6 loss to the Blue Jays. The Guardians called up right-hander Darren McCaughan from Triple-A Columbus to replace Sandlin in the bullpen. Rotowire.com Today, 11:48 am

  • Nabs win in relief in MLB debut
Petersen (1-0) earned the win over Colorado on Tuesday, allowing one run on one hit and one walk while striking out two batters over two innings.

Advice: After being called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sunday, Petersen saw his first big-league action Tuesday at Coors Field. He entered in the seventh inning with Los Angeles down four runs and allowed the Rockies to increase their lead on a walk, single and sacrifice fly. Petersen returned for the eighth and retired the side in order, then found himself in the win column after the Dodgers pulled ahead with a seven-run ninth frame. Petersen will likely be used mainly in low-leverage spots during his time with the big club. Rotowire.com Today, 10:44 am
  • Getting spot start Wednesday
Liberatore will start Wednesday's game in Miami in place of the injured Kyle Gibson (back), Lynn Worthy of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Advice: Gibson was a late scratch, forcing the Cardinals to turn to Liberatore, who threw 12 pitches and allowed one run over two-thirds of an inning in a relief appearance during Tuesday's loss to the Marlins. Liberatore has made three starts for St. Louis this season, but his last one came a month ago. He hasn't thrown more than 23 pitches in an appearance since then and will be going on zero days' rest Wednesday, so he'll presumably be in store for an abbreviated outing. Rotowire.com Today, 9:47 am
