  • Ryne Nelson works into eighth versus Giants
    Ryne Nelson threw 7 2/3 innings and held the Giants to two runs in a no-decision Monday.

    Advice: The Diamondbacks didn’t win this one until the bottom of the ninth, so Ryan Thompson was credited with the victory. Nelson’s fine outing came with just one strikeout. He allowed 11 hard-hit balls, including seven pummeled at least 103 mph, but he came away giving up just six hits in lowering his ERA to 5.44. He’ll face the Padres next.   • Roughed up in loss
    Gore (4-5) took the loss Monday against the Mets, allowing six earned runs on seven hits and four walks in 4.1 innings. He struck out two.

    Advice: Gore loaded the bases with one out in the fifth inning before departing, unfortunately reliever Dylan Floro allowed all three runners to score, adding three earned runs to Gore's stat line. Monday's outing was very uncharacteristic for the southpaw, who recorded a season-low two strikeouts and allowed more than two earned runs for the first time since April 19. After tonight's rough outing, the 25-year-old sports a 3.57 ERA, a 1.37 WHIP and 74 strikeouts in 63 innings pitched.     Tyler Anderson pitched 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball Monday against the Padres.

    Advice: Anderson has made a mockery of the metrics all season, but especially lately; his last four starts have seen him allow a total of four runs even though he’s given up three homers and posted a 14/13 K/BB ratio in 26 2/3 innings.   • Matt Waldron works into seventh in no-decision
    Matt Waldron went without a decision while allowing one run and two hits in 6 1/3 innings Monday against the Angels.

    Advice: Waldron was back down to 33% usage of the knuckler tonight after utilizing the pitch a career-high 55% of the time last time out. He was plenty effective, but he might have been even more so with more knuckler usage, considering that all seven hard-hit balls he allowed came on other pitches.     Nelson allowed two runs on six hits over 7.2 innings in a no-decision Monday. He struck out one during the win over the Giants.

    Advice: Nelson gave up one run through six innings before Heliot Ramos knocked a solo shot in the seventh. It was Nelson's longest start of the year and his first time finishing more than six innings. He needed only 80 pitches to do so, but his one strikeout and four whiffs weren't very impressive.     Anderson allowed a run on five hits and three walks over 6.2 innings in a no-decision Monday. He struck out two during the victory against San Diego.

    Advice: Anderson served up a solo shot to Manny Machado in the first inning but otherwise worked around danger for the rest of the night. Anderson has given up exactly one run in four straight outings despite registering a lackluster 14:13 K:BB during that span. On the year, his ERA is down to an impressive 2.37, while he's delivered eight quality starts in 12 appearances. Anderson's next start is in line to be at home against the Astros.     Gibson did not factor into the decision in Monday's loss to the Astros, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks with eight strikeouts over 5.2 innings.

    Advice: Gibson allowed a two-run home run to Yordan Alvarez in the third inning and was pulled with a 4-3 lead in the sixth after allowing a run and loading the bases. Andrew Kittredge was able to get out of the jam, but the Astros later rallied for four runs in the eighth. Despite faltering late, Gibson has now pitched into the sixth inning in 10 of his 12 starts this season. In those 12 games, Gibson has posted a 3.69 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 60:28 K:BB.     Advice: Waldron turned in a second straight quality start Monday, allowing only one run in the fourth inning. He's given up two or fewer runs in five consecutive outings but has finished at least six innings just twice in that span. Still, his ERA has fallen from 5.82 to 3.98 during this run.     Advice: Verlander got into immediate trouble, allowing solo home runs to Alec Burleson and Nolan Gorman in the first inning. He labored through the next four, surrendering a total of eight hard-hit balls, including another homer by Gorman, and leaving with a 4-2 deficit. Verlander was coming off back-to-back nine-strikeout efforts, but he has now failed to reach six innings in four of his nine starts this season.
