• Continues to hit
Refsnyder went 2-for-5 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored in Thursday's 6-4 loss to the Guardians.

Advice: Refsnyder is raking during a five-game hit streak, going 9-for-20 with extra-base hits in all five contests. The plan was for him to play against left-handers, but injuries to key players have led to four of his five starts against right-handers, against whom he's 7-for-16 with five extra-base hits. • Expected back Friday
Merrill (groin) is expected to return to the lineup Friday, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Advice: Merrill was scratched Thursday but the issue was deemed precautionary. He spoke to reporters following the Padres' loss and said he feels fine and is adjusting to the rigors of the MLB schedule. While Merrill is expected to return Friday, it will be worth confirming he is in the lineup as San Diego opens a series against the Phillies. Rotowire.com Today, 6:46 pm

  • Tyler Nevin homers to lift A’s past Yankees
Tyler Nevin walloped a two-run homer on Thursday, powering the Athletics to a 3-1 victory over the Yankees.

Advice: Nevin went deep off Yankees southpaw Nestor Cortes in the third inning for his first round-tripper of the season. It wound up being enough run support for Oakland starter Alex Wood and a quartet of relievers, who combined to limit New York’s lineup to just one run in an impressive victory. • Jonny DeLuca (hand) starts rehab assignment
Jonny DeLuca (hand) went 0-for-4 with an RBI on Thursday in a minor league rehab game for Triple-A Durham.

Advice: DeLuca has been out since early March due to a fractured right hand, so it’s a positive sign that he’s back in minor league games, and could be ready to make his Rays debut at some point in early May. Rotoworld Today, 6:14 pm

  • Homers in loss
Smith started at shortstop and went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday's 4-3 loss to Seattle.

Advice: Smith launched his first homer of the season in the fourth inning, which tied the game momentarily before the Mariners plated two a half-inning later. He got the start at shortstop while primary starter Corey Seager served as DH a day after he left a game with a bruised shin. If Seager is limited to DH for a bit, Smith will be the primary fill-in at short. If Seager is ready for a defensive role, then Smith will go back to sharing third base with Ezequiel Duran. Smith is batting .292/.393/.417 over 84 plate appearances, much better than his previous two MLB seasons would indicate. Rotowire.com Today, 5:59 pm

  • Nolan Jones sits out Thursday with back issue
Nolan Jones (back) remained out of the lineup for Thursday’s series finale against the Padres.

Advice: It seems like Jones will be ready to return for this weekend’s highly-anticipated series against the Astros in Mexico City after sitting out a pair of contests against the Padres following an early exit from Tuesday’s game due to back stiffness. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now. There should be some clarity on his status at some point later this week. Rotoworld Today, 4:12 pm

  • Mookie Betts tallies two hits, steals base in win
Mookie Betts went 2-for-3 with his sixth stolen base of the season on Thursday in the Dodgers’ win over the Nationals.

Advice: Betts continues to serve as Los Angeles’ primary offensive catalyst, which is even more unbelievable considering he’s playing shortstop everyday for the first time in his professional career. It’s unreal. The 31-year-old fantasy superstar’s latest multi-hit effort raises his batting average to a sublime .374 (40-for-107) mark to go along with 27 runs scored, six homers, 21 RBI and six steals through 27 games. • Brenton Doyle picks up three hits, two steals
Brenton Doyle went 3-for-4 with an RBI, three runs scored and two stolen bases against the Padres on Thursday.

Advice: Doyle scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning in a game that the Rockies trailed 9-4 coming into the inning. The pair of steals gives the speedy outfielder four on the season, and the three knocks improves his average to .330. Doyle was not a good offensive player in 2023, and it’s more than fair to question whether any of this is sustainable. That being said, a friendly home park and impressive athleticism at least makes Doyle worth monitoring. Rotoworld Today, 3:18 pm

  • Hunter Goodman hits three-run homer vs. Padres
Hunter Goodman blasted a three-run homer in a victory over the Padres on Thursday.

Advice: Goodman was just recalled Wednesday from Triple-A, and he has his first homer of the season. The 24-year-old hit seven homers over 20 games in Triple-A and has shown easy power in his right-handed bat, but there are reasons to worry that he’ll be a contributor in any other category.
