• Paul Sewald shuts down Phillies for ninth save
Paul Sewald pitched a clean ninth inning on Friday to earn the save.

Advice: There must be something about the city of Philadelphia or Citizens Bank itself that just calms Sewald because he did on Friday what he did four times in the last NLCS: shut the Phillies down. David Dahl did put a ball to the warning track, but it was to no avail. Sewald has not allowed a run in 14 straight appearances this season. Rotoworld 5 minutes ago
  • Taijuan Walker struggles again, allows three homers
Taijuan Walker allowed four earned runs in four innings of work on Friday against the Diamondbacks. He struck out three and walked three en route to the loss.

Advice: Walker’s dreadful season continued in this one. He had fewer whiffs than homers allowed which is all you need to know about this start and his season overall. It’s notable that Spencer Turnbull followed Walker in long-relief. He settled the game down and made this appearance exactly five days after his last long-relief appearance where Walker’s next appearance is likely coming in five days from this game. Turnbull had a strong April in the rotation with Walker on the IL and it’s difficult to find a reason that Walker would be more effective than Turnbull in that role going forward. • Carlos Carrasco cruises through six innings for win
Carlos Carrasco allowed just one run across six innings on Friday in a 7-1 win over the Blue Jays. He struck out seven without walking a batter.

Advice: No, you did not fall into a wormhole and transport yourself back to 2017 despite Carrasco’s line making it feel that way. He was flat out good in this one. His fastball ticked up to 93 MPH and his slider forced seven whiffs on 13 swings as he mixed all five of his pitches against this pitiful Blue Jays lineup. Tip the cap to the veteran Carrasco for a great start. Rotoworld 34 minutes ago

  • Yariel Rodríguez can’t get through two innings
Yariel Rodríguez lasted just 1 1/3 innings on Friday against the Guardians and allowed four earned runs. He walked three batters and struck out just one.

Advice: Rodríguez’s return to the Blue Jays’ rotation left a lot to be desired. His usually impressive slider did not look sharp and was moving less compared to before his injury. Without that, he didn’t have a put-away pitch and struggled to retire nearly every batter he faced. He’d built up to about 80 pitches in April and could get back there with legitimate strikeout upside if the Jays let him. He just isn’t there yet. Rotoworld 37 minutes ago
  • Earns 13th save
Foley struck out one over 1.1 innings to earn the save in a 2-1 win over the White Sox on Friday.

Advice: Foley was summoned to protect a 2-1 lead with two outs in the eighth inning and induced a groundout from Andrew Vaughn. He hit Paul DeJong with a pitch in the ninth but ended the game with a double play to earn his 13th save of the season. Foley has not allowed an earned run in seven June appearances and is now 13-for-15 in save chances with a 2.67 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 22:9 K:BB over 27 innings in 2024. Rotowire.com 54 minutes ago

  • Completes seven innings in loss
Fedde (5-2) took the loss to the Tigers on Friday, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk with three strikeouts over seven innings.

Advice: Fedde allowed a two-run home run to Carson Kelly but was otherwise excellent, retiring the final 14 batters he faced. Despite the loss, this was Fedde's third consecutive quality start, and he has now yielded fewer than three earned runs in 12 of 16 outings this year. Fedde owns a 3.05 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 86:24 K:BB over 94.1 innings in what has been the best season of his career to this point . He tentatively lines up to face the Dodgers next week. • Luis Ortiz allows six runs in four innings
Luis Ortiz followed opener Cameron Mlodzinski and got hit hard by the Rays allowing six runs and 10 hits in four innings of work. He struck out three and walked one.

Advice: Ortiz pitched better than his line, which isn’t saying much. The Rays made a habit of squeaking singles through the infield and Jose Lowe burned him for two loud home runs. Even with this disaster, Ortiz’s ERA ticked up to just 3.45. His fastball and sinker each sit 97 MPH, his slider is nasty, and his cutter is coming along. Ortiz remains risky but could prove valuable in the second half. Rotoworld 55 minutes ago

  • Strikes out eight in win
Flaherty (5-4) earned the win against the White Sox on Friday, allowing one run on five hits and two walks with eight strikeouts over 5.2 innings.

Advice: Flaherty threw four scoreless innings before surrendering a solo home run to Tommy Pham in the fifth. He then allowed a hit and a walk with two outs in the sixth before being pulled just shy of a quality start at 98 pitches. The home run was the first earned run Flaherty has allowed since May 23, and the pitch count was encouraging considering he was limited to 73 pitches in his last outing following a back injury. On the season, he owns a 2.92 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 108:13 K:BB over 83.1 innings and tentatively lines up to face the Phillies next week. Rotowire.com 55 minutes ago

  • Ryan Pepiot unravels in fourth inning
Ryan Pepiot allowed two earned runs in 3 1/3 on Friday against the Pirates. He walked four and struck out three.

Advice: Pepiot started strong with three punch outs in his first three innings and held a big lead. He looked to be in complete control until a lead-off walk to Rowdy Tellez in the bottom of the fourth and wouldn’t make it through the inning. His line could’ve been worse as he left the game with the bases loaded and one out, but Colin Poche got out of the jam with a double-play ball. It seemed he didn’t have a feel for his slider in this one as he threw just three. That pitch has been a difference-maker for him this season and it would be a concern if he took it out of his repertoire going forward. Rotoworld 56 minutes ago
