      Cease (7-7) took the loss Tuesday, coughing up six runs on eight hits and two walks over 3.2 innings as the Padres fell 7-0 to the Rangers. He struck out five.

      Advice: The right-hander got no help from his offense, but Cease created his own problems by serving up six extra-base hits, including a pair of homers by Nathaniel Lowe. Cease has been tagged for four runs or more in three of his last four starts, walking multiple batters each time.       Finnegan struck out one over a perfect inning in Tuesday's extra-inning loss to the Mets.

      Advice: Finnegan entered in the top of the ninth in a 2-2 game and fired a perfect frame. The 32-year-old has delivered four consecutive scoreless innings, allowing two hits and one walk over that stretch. Finnegan owns the third-most saves in baseball with 22.       Alonso went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run during Tuesday's 7-2 win over the Nationals in 10 innings.

      Advice: Alonso capped off the Mets' five-run 10th inning with a two-run blast off Robert Garcia, the first baseman's 18th home run of the campaign. He's riding a six-game hit streak, batting 8-for-24 (.333) with six runs and five RBI during that span. Alonso owns an .811 OPS with a 20.3 percent strikeout rate.       Clase (4-1) pitched a perfect inning to earn the win Tuesday over the White Sox.

      Advice: Clase kept the game tied at 6-6 in the top of the ninth inning, needing just 10 pitches to retire the side. Bo Naylor's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame sealed the win for the Guardians, giving Clase his first decision since May 19. The closer is on an eight-inning scoreless streak and has maintained elite ratios with a 0.67 ERA, 0.62 WHIP and 39:4 K:BB through 40.1 innings overall.       Brent Rooker socked a dinger and stole a base on Tuesday evening as the Athletics triumphed over the visiting Angels.

      Advice: The 29-year-old slugger opened the scoring in the ballgame with his 405-foot (108.7 mph EV) solo shot off of Angels’ starter Jose Soriano in the fourth inning. Rooker also drew a walk in the fifth inning and swiped second base, but he was left stranded there.       Dylan Cease allowed eight hits and six earned runs over 3 2/3 innings in Tuesday’s loss to the Rangers.

      Advice: Cease had an up-and-down first inning. While he recorded all three of his outs via the strikeout, he allowed two hits, with the second coming on a two-run homer by Nathaniel Lowe to give the Rangers an early lead. It would only get worse from there, as Cease would give up another two-run bomb to Lowe in the third inning and was pulled in the fourth inning shortly after allowing a sixth run off a Marcus Semien single. It’s been a rough stretch for Cease, who has allowed 17 earned runs over his last 19 innings while striking out 29 batters and walking nine.       Emmanuel Clase pitched a scoreless ninth inning in a 7-6 win over the White Sox on Tuesday.

      Advice: Clase pitched the ninth in a tie game and allowed no runs with no hits, no strikeouts, and no walks. He then earned a win when the Guardians scored off Michael Kopech in the bottom of the inning. He now has a 4-1 record to go along with 25 saves on the season. Pretty, pretty, pretty good.     • Jordan Montgomery hits IL with knee inflammation
      Diamondbacks placed LHP Jordan Montgomery on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to June 29, with right knee inflammation.

      Advice: Arizona had to come up with something here since Montgomery badly needs to press the reset button on the metaphorical console. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo told reporters that injury occurred during a bullpen session over the weekend and he doesn’t expect it to be an extended absence. The 31-year-old southpaw’s Arizona debut has gone about as poorly as one could imagine with a bloated 6.44 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 45/23 K/BB ratio across 65 2/3 innings (13 starts).
