Sonny Gray allowed eight hits and five runs in five innings of work against the Nationals on Friday. He struck out six and walked one in a no-decision.
Advice: It was a very humid night in our nation’s capital and you could see the sweat pouring off Gray in his gray jersey. Clearly uncomfortable, he also could not find a way through lefties CJ Abrams, Jesse Winker, and Luis García Jr. They all tagged him for at least one extra-base hit while Winker and García had five combined hard-hit balls off Gray. He struggles with lefties relative to righties (.319 wOBA vs. L, .210 wOBA vs. R) mostly because his sweeper is less effective against opposite-handed batters. He tried to combat that with more curveballs, but it wasn’t enough.
