• Missing another start
Riley (side) is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Cubs.

Advice: He'll remain on the bench for a 10th consecutive game while he continues to heal up from a left intercostal strain. Atlanta had initially viewed Riley as day-to-day when he departed an April 12 game against the Mets with the injury, but the club likely would have placed him on the 10-day injured list had they known the issue would have kept him out for more than a week. Riley was able to exhibit some sign of progress by taking swings on the field Tuesday, but it's not clear if he'll be on track to rejoin the starting nine during this weekend's three-game series in Pittsburgh. • Jon Gray on the 15-day IL with groin injury
Rangers placed Jon Gray (groin) on the 15-day IL.

Advice: Jon was removed from Tuesday’s start after 75 pitches with a groin injury. The team has referred to the injury as a “mild strain” and doesn’t expect him to miss more than 15 days; however, they said the same thing about Nathan Eovaldi and he’s now approaching three weeks on the IL. It might be safe to assume fantasy managers will be without Gray for three to four weeks, but he’s been pitching well enough to hold on your IL if you have spots. Rotoworld 33 minutes ago

  • Jake Cronenworth playing 2B for Padres on Thursday
Jake Cronenworth is starting at second base for the first time in the 2024 season.

Advice: This felt inevitable after the Padres traded for Luis Arraez, who is a well below-average defensive second baseman. Arraez will now slide to first base with Cronenworth moving to second. Cronenworth has been an above-average defensive second baseman over the last four seasons, so this move doesn’t figure to hurt the Padres at all and could be a boost for their pitchers. • Braves option Daysbel Hernández to Triple-A
Braves optioned reliever Daysbel Hernández to Triple-A Gwinnett

Advice: Hernández will make room on the roster for AJ Smith-Shawver, who is starting on Thursday. The right-hander will return to a 1.65 ERA and 22/9 K/BB over 12 appearances and 16 1/3 innings at Triple-A. He figures to get another shot with the big-league club soon. Rotoworld 40 minutes ago
  • Plans to test out hand with swings
Fraley plans to test out his injured right hand with some swings Thursday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.

Advice: X-rays on Fraley's hand came back clean after he exited Tuesday's contest versus the Padres following a hit by pitch. However, he still has some swelling and will be absent from the lineup Thursday for a second straight day. Consider the outfielder day-to-day. Rotowire.com 41 minutes ago

  • AJ Smith-Shawver promoted for start on Thursday
Braves recalled RHP AJ Smith-Shawver from Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday.

Advice: This move was rumored yesterday and is now official. With Bryce Elder disappointing in his five starts, the 21-year-old Smith-Shawver will get a chance to stake his claim to a spot in the rotation. Daysbel Hernández was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett in a corresponding move. Smith-Shawver has improved his velocity and overall stuff+ grades this year in the minors, but his command has been an issue, leading to a decent amount of hard contact. In May, he has a 5.40 ERA and 1.47 WHIP with 19 strikeouts and nine walks in 18 1/3 innings. The potential is clearly there, but he needs to show more consistency before we feel confident about his ability to stick in the rotation this year. Rotoworld 42 minutes ago
  • Shifted to 60-day IL
The Rangers transferred Bradford (ribs) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Thursday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Advice: The transaction clears a spot on the 40-man roster for right-hander Jesus Tinoco, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Round Rock. Bradford recently experienced a setback with his ribs injury and now won't be eligible to return for several weeks. Rotowire.com 49 minutes ago

  • Lands on IL with groin strain
The Rangers placed Gray on the 15-day injured list Thursday, retroactive to May 22, with a right groin strain, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Advice: Gray suffered the injury in Tuesday's 5-2 loss to the Phillies, and an MRI revealed a mild strain. He would seem to have a good chance at returning from the IL when his 15 days are up or shortly thereafter, but it will depend on how he recovers over the next several days. Gray had been slated to start Sunday in Minnesota, but it's possible Nathan Eovaldi (groin) will be ready to return that day. Rotowire.com 51 minutes ago

  • Goes on IL with triceps injury
The Reds placed Pagan on the 15-day injured list prior to Thursday's game against the Padres due to a right triceps injury, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Pagan hadn't pitched since Sunday due to the injury, and though an MRI on his arm recently came back negative, the right-hander apparently didn't respond well to playing catch Tuesday. He'll be shut down for the next two weeks while recovering from the injury, depriving the Reds of one of their middle-relief options in front of closer Alexis Diaz. Rotowire.com 51 minutes ago
