• Throwing and running
Canzone (shoulder) began a throwing and running program Friday, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.

Advice: General manager Justin Hollander added that the team hopes for Canzone to begin a hitting progression sometime next week, though he is still several weeks out from full baseball activities. The 26-year-old outfielder sprained the AC joint in his left shoulder April 14, and Hollander's comments suggest he is not close to returning anytime soon. Luke Raley and Jonatan Clase should continue splitting time in left field while Canzone works his way back. Rotowire.com 3 minutes ago

  • Kyle Finnegan slams door on Marlins in ninth
Kyle Finnegan secured his eighth save of the season on Friday night, working a scoreless ninth inning to preserve a two-run lead against the Marlins.

Advice: The 32-year-old right-hander made things look awfully easy in this one, getting Josh Bell on a swinging third strike, Jesus Sanchez on a line out to shortstop and Tim Anderson on a ground ball to second — needing only six pitches (all strikes) to get the job done. The underlying metrics aren’t great, but it’s hard to argue with the results that Finnegan has put up so far. He now boasts a 2.38 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and a 10/5 K/BB ratio over 11 1/3 innings while converting eight of his first nine save chances. Rotoworld 6 minutes ago
  • Trevor Williams pitches well again in no-decision
Trevor Williams delivered another strong start in a no-decision against the Marlins on Friday night, giving up just one run on five hits over his five innings of work.

Advice: The crafty right-hander also issued a pair of walks on the night while recording only one strikeout. The lone run that scored against him came in the third inning as Vidal Bruján smacked a leadoff single, was awarded second on a disengagement violation and scored on an RBI single by Nick Fortes. Williams got six whiffs on 80 pitches on the evening, posting an underwhelming CSW of only 20 percent. The 32-year-old hurler will carry a stellar 2.70 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 19/8 K/BB ratio (26 2/3 innings) into a tough matchup against the Rangers in Arlington on Wednesday. Rotoworld 12 minutes ago

  • Vidal Bruján scores lone run in loss to Nationals
Vidal Bruján went 2-for-3 and scored the Marlins’ lone run in Friday night’s loss to the Nationals.

Advice: The 26-year-old infielder led off the third inning with a single off of Trevor Williams. He was then awarded second base on a disengagement violation before racing around to score on an RBI single off the bat of Nick Fortes. The former top prospect is off to a very slow start in 2024, slashing a pitiful .154/.241/.192 with zero homers or stolen bases in his first 29 plate appearances. Rotoworld 16 minutes ago

  • Anthony Maldonado fires three scoreless as opener
Anthony Maldonado was terrific in his big league debut against the Nationals on Friday, allowing just three hits over three scoreless innings in a no-decision.

Advice: The 26-year-old right-hander struck out two batters on the night and didn’t issue a base on balls. Filling in for the injured Jesús Luzardo, Maldonado got seven swings and misses on just 36 pitches in the game — six of those on his slider — while posting a strong CSW of 33 percent. It’s likely that he’ll head back to Triple-A Jacksonville after this start, as the Marlins will want to add another fresh arm to the bullpen while charting a course of action for Luzardo’s rotation spot. • Likely won't return when eligible
General manager Justin Hollander said Friday that Crawford (oblique) likely won't be activated from the injured list when he's eligible May 5, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Crawford was placed on the injured list Thursday with a Grade 1 oblique strain -- the least severe type of strain -- though it appears the 29-year-old shortstop is still facing an extended absence. Hollander didn't provide an exact timeline for Crawford's return, but a 2-to-3 week absence seems to be the best possible scenario. Rotowire.com 44 minutes ago

  • J.P. Crawford (oblique) to miss at least 2-3 weeks
Mariners’ general manager Justin Hollander told reporters on Friday that he expects J.P. Crawford (oblique) to miss at least two or three weeks in a best case scenario.

Advice: Crawford landed on the injured list on Thursday with a right oblique strain. It’s not surprising news, so oblique strains can tend to linger if they aren’t allowed to fully heal, so the Mariners’ will do the prudent thing here and proceed cautiously. Dylan Moore looks like he’ll continue to function as the team’s regular shortstop while Crawford is shelved. Rotoworld 53 minutes ago

  • Carlos Correa (intercostal) takes grounders Friday
Carlos Correa (intercostal) took ground balls on the field prior to Friday’s game against the Angels.

Advice: Twins’ manager Rocco Baldelli told reporters earlier in the week that Correa was close to resuming baseball activities, and it’s encouraging to see him back out on the field. The Twins are going to continue to play it cautiously here, but it’s nice to see him taking steps in the right direction. Rotoworld Today, 5:31 pm

  • Padres recall Jeremiah Estrada from Triple-A
Padres recalled RHP Jeremiah Estrada from Triple-A El Paso.

Advice: For a few days at least, Estrada will add a fresh arm to the Padres’ bullpen as the team determines how they would like to handle the rotation spot vacated by Randy Vasquez. Estrada has been fantastic at Triple-A El Paso this season, posting a 2.08 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and an eye-popping 20/3 K/BB ratio across 8 2/3 innings in eight appearances. Rotoworld Today, 5:11 pm
