    Advice: After needing 78 pitches to get through three frames, Buehler didn't come out for the fourth, marking the 29-year-old's shortest start of 2024. He surrendered a two-run home run to Nick Gonzales in the third inning, the right-hander's seventh long ball allowed in 28.0 innings. Buehler's been shaky since returning from Tommy John surgery, yielding exactly three runs in five of his six starts this season to fuel a 4.82 ERA.   • Big improvement over Wednesday
    Beeks picked up five outs for the Rockies in Thursday's 3-2 win over the Cardinals, striking out two while allowing no hits or walks between the eighth and ninth innings.

    Advice: This was a major improvement on Beeks' outing Wednesday, in which he allowed five earned runs and blew the save in a loss to the Reds. The bad news, however, is that the Rockies brought in Tyler Kinley to get the final out and record the save Thursday. Beeks does lead the Rockies with six saves, but the team's closing situation is as muddled as it has been at any point this season.   • Walker Buehler shaky in short outing vs. Pirates
    Walker Buehler was charged with four runs (three earned) over three innings on Thursday in a no-decision against the Pirates.

    Advice: Buehler was staked to a four-run lead before taking the mound at PNC Park, but it vanished by the third inning of this one as he was tagged for seven hits, including a two-run homer by Nick Gonzales. It wasn’t completely his fault as the Dodgers committed a pair of errors and weren’t able to make a couple catches on balls that ended up going for hits and drove up his pitch count in the process. He finished with three strikeouts and only issued one walk. The hard-throwing 29-year-old righty holds a lackluster 4.82 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 27/8 K/BB ratio across 28 innings (six starts). He hasn’t quite returned to fantasy ace status yet, but it’s still early considering how much time he’s missed since undergoing his second Tommy John surgery.   • Hangs on for fourth save
    Garcia earned the save Thursday against the Orioles despite allowing two runs on a hit in the ninth inning. He struck out two.

    Advice: Garcia had Baltimore down to their final out before hitting Austin Hays with a pitch and subsequently surrendering a two-run homer to Ryan O'Hearn, cutting Toronto's lead to 6-5. However, Garcia would then strike out Kyle Stowers for the final out, securing his fourth save this season. The 33-year-old Garcia has converted both of Toronto's save chances since Jordan Romano (elbow) was placed on the IL on June 1. While he's allowed three runs in his last three innings, Garcia still sports a solid 2.16 ERA with a 0.72 WHIP and 33:7 K:BB across 25 innings this year. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 3:10 pm
     
  • Yimi Garcia picks up save despite allowing two runs
    Yimi Garcia was credited with a save even after allowing two runs Thursday to the Orioles.

    Advice: Garcia was handed a three-run cushion, and he needed it. He allowed a two-run homer to Ryan O’Hearn, but was able to limit the damage to just that roundtripper while picking up his fourth save of the year.   • Nabs second win
    Garcia (2-0) picked up the win Wednesday over the Orioles, striking out two in a perfect ninth inning.

    Advice: The right-hander needed only 10 pitches (eight strikes) to dispatch Baltimore's 6-7-8 hitters in the ninth, and Garcia got rewarded when Isiah Kiner-Falefa hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the frame. Garcia has recorded a win (one), save (one) or hold (five) in seven of 10 appearances over the last month, posting a 2.53 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 15:4 K:BB in 10.2 innings during that stretch.     Cease (5-5) allowed three runs on four hits and a walk while striking out six over six innings to take the loss Wednesday versus the Angels.

    Advice: Cease took his third loss in five outings. He was done in by the long ball again, as Nolan Schanuel took him deep to lead off the bottom of the first inning and Zach Neto added a two-run blast in the second. Cease has surrendered six homers during his five-start winless stretch. The right-hander is now at a 3.51 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 93:22 K:BB over 77 innings across 13 starts this season. He's not having a bad year by any means -- his 2.6 BB/9 is the best of his career. Cease will look to snap his skid in his next start, tentatively projected to be at home versus the Athletics.     Advice: Taillon gave up a leadoff home run to Corey Julks and then surrendered four more runs in the fourth inning. The Cubs were able to cover the damage for Taillon, allowing him to escape with a third straight no-decision. The right-hander has given up at least three runs in his last four starts and now has a 3.47 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 35:13 K:BB over 49.1 innings through nine outings on the year.     Advice: All three runs off Cease came via the home run. Nolan Schanuel got the scoring started with a solo blast to lead off the first inning. Zach Neto followed with a two-run shot in the second. Cease settled in to toss four more scoreless frames while striking out six.
