  • Ryan Helsley picks up 21st save vs. Rockies
    Ryan Helsley converted a save while not allowing a run during Friday’s game against the Rockies.

    Advice: Helsley breezed through his inning with a pair of strikeouts and needed just 11 pitches to pick up his 21st save of the season. The right-hander has had a couple scuffles in the first two-plus months of the campaign, but overall there haven’t been many stoppers better in 2024. Rotoworld 35 minutes ago
     
  • Bryce Miller struggles over five in no-decision
    Bryce Miller gave up seven runs in five innings but didn’t factor in the decision against the Royals on Friday.

    Advice: Miller was handed an 8-0 lead, but he nearly gave it all back himself. The right-hander walked three while allowing eight hits — including a three-run homer to MJ Melendez — and he struck out just one in his worst start of the season. Miller has mostly looked the part, but this one sees his ERA jump up to 3.81. There are still things hear to figure out before he’s an elite fantasy option. Rotoworld 53 minutes ago
     
  • Nick Lodolo limits Cubs to one run in victory
    Nick Lodolo held the Cubs to one run in six innings and struck out seven in the Reds’ 3-2 victory Friday.

    Advice: A Dansby Swanson homer was the only damage. Lodolo picked up his sixth win in nine starts this year, matching his total in 26 starts between 2022 and ’23. He’ll take a 2.92 ERA into his next start versus the Reds. Rotoworld Today, 6:43 pm
     
  • Ryan allows two runs in loss Friday
    Joe Ryan allowed two runs in seven innings and took the loss against the Pirates on Friday night.



    Advice: Ryan gave up two hits, walked two and struck out eight. The runs against Ryan came on an Oneil Cruz solo home run and a sacrifice fly by Nick Gonzales. He pitched well but didn’t get any run support from the Twins lineup. Ryan had won three of his last five previous starts. His ERA is now 3.30 on the season. The 28-year-old right-hander is set to face the Rockies at home next week.

  • Nico Hoerner out of lineup due to hand injury
    Cubs manager Craig Counsell now says X-rays last night on Nico Hoerner’s hand came back “somewhat inconclusive,” and the second baseman is not playing in Friday’s game.

    Advice: It was originally reported that the X-rays came back negative after Hoerner was hit on the right hand by a pitch. Hoerner, though, had some trouble gripping the bat and swinging today. Hopefully, this is still just a day-to-day thing. There is the potential for some bad news, though. David Bote is starting at second base tonight. Rotoworld Today, 2:26 pm

  • Max Scherzer (thumb) to make rehab start Sunday
    Max Scherzer will make a rehab start for Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday.

    Advice: It will be interesting to see how quickly the Rangers let Scherzer return from the minors. The 39-year-old has made a total of six minor league rehab starts during his 16-year career and never more than two during one IL stay. One would think a typical pitcher would get three or four in his situation (he missed the entire spring after back surgery and then made rehab start in April before injuring his thumb).   • Resuming rehab assignment Sunday
    Scherzer (back/arm) will resume a rehab assignment with Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.

    Advice: Scherzer had to be pulled off his initial rehab assignment in early May following a nerve problem with his throwing arm, but he's been trending in the right direction in recent weeks after receiving a cortisone injection. The 39-year-old was initially placed on the injured list due to his recovery from offseason back surgery. Scherzer threw 40 pitches in a live batting practice session earlier this week, so he should be ready for at least that many pitches Sunday. He will need multiple rehab starts before rejoining the Rangers' rotation, but a return before the end of June would seem to be in play. Rotowire.com Today, 1:36 pm

  • Sitting out after HBP
    Hoerner is not in Friday's lineup in Cincinnati after being hit on the hand by a pitch in Thursday's win over the White Sox, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

    Advice: Hoerner was struck by a pitch in the fourth inning Thursday but stayed in and finished that game. He underwent a precautionary X-ray afterward, which evidently came back clean.   • Paul Sewald turns in hitless inning for save
    Paul Seward pitched a hitless ninth with a one-run lead for his seventh save Thursday against the Padres.
